I never thought I'd see the day where I'm glad to be in an gym with a bunch of old naked dudes chatting your ear off in the locker room.. than one with a bunch of Millassholes sitting on the one squat rack texting for 10 minutes.

Heck, I don't even care if those people are hot chicks.. just get rid of them.. Give me a gym that's 40+. I'll gladly pay more even WITH the wrinkly nutsacks that go down to their kneecaps.

Amazing the difference between being 24 and 29 is.. I can't wait to see how crotchety I am at 34.

All kidding aside, I'd rather spend my time at a gym with adults than a gym with teens and other millennials. If that means I don't get to see as much tail, then so be it.

Not to mention, I haven't met many gym chicks that aren't whacked out of their minds.

You would win because unlike 1/8 of millennials, I have a job and work during the day. I get my workouts in at night or on weekends
As long as posting on the off-topic message board forum at catsillustrated.com while at work makes you feel like more of an adult than them I'm cool with it.

Who needs a gym. Just do push-ups, pull-ups, dips, squats and run. No gym required
Largely due to the fact that 90% of people don't have the equipment nor motivation to do that without showing up at the gym. Plus, no one is trying to do all body weight exercises so they can look like Gene Simmons.

So you might workout 2-3x a week, got it.

With a pull-up bar, a bench press, and some dumbbells you can get a lot accomplished. I alternate from home and the gym. Sometimes months at a time. Change is good.

Definitely an advocate for the home gym. But you need equipment. More than just a pull-up bar and a few dumbbells. You need a solid adjustable bench, an Olympic barbell, plates, etc... if you want to hit ALL muscles to varying degrees.

I've always had the biggest trouble trying to hit my back at home. Pull-up bar is great, but for deadlifts, most people's strongest lift, you need about $200 worth of weight (is it still $1=1pound?).. and you'll blow past that in a few months. Let-me ups? You need a full bench press. One-arm DB rows? You'll need 60lb+ DBs very quick. No cable rows at home either.

If you have the motivation to workout from home (and not be distracted), the space, and a few hundred to get started with the ability to add more and more equipment and weight over time, it's a great way to go. But it's harder than you think to have all 3 of those. Sometimes the $9.99/month gym membership is easier..

I have a lot of equipment. Two full weight trees, bench, squat rack, pull up bar, leg curls/extension, 3 jump boxes, 3 sets of Dumbbells, large tracks of artificial turf to workout on, AC garage, etc and I still prefer the gym. Less distraction, gets me out of the house, see my gym friends, all the equipment in the world, etc.

And yeah @LineSkiCat14 it's still about $1/pound but obviously a little less than that the more you buy.

I'm thinking about a home gym. I've got a two month old that's making it difficult for the wife and I to get to the gym. How much would it cost me? I was going to dump about 5 grand into it to get it started. That enough?

I never know what's a joke, what's mocking, and what's serious at this place

But you don't need $5000 to get started.. Wayyy to much. You need maybe $500.

Probably Powerblocks/Bowflex dumbbells for $350 and an adjustable bench that can go flat/45 degree/upright. Those two things right there can hit every muscle at least one way..

When you want to start hitting a muscle 3 ways, or 5 ways, or more.. that's when you have to start shelling out money.

EDIT: When I say "3 ways".. maybe you do a back/bicep routine where you do 3 back exercises and 3 biceps exercises. While you can hit your Back with dumbbells and a bench, you may need some more equipment if you want to actually do a "back routine".

Gene Simmons? Hell with that tongue it doesn't matter what he looks like.

I've done what you suggested before. And it works for a little bit. But again you just can't hit everything the way you want to with that set up. Once you've been in a gym for so long it's hard to go back to the basics.

Man IDK what to make of that link. A dual-cable machine? Not really the first thing I'd recommend for a home gym. How much does the weight stack go up to? I guess it's nice that it comes with kettlebells and some other weights (I think, freaking Alibaba is wonky).

If you're gonna be spending over a grand, why not go with a squat rack from Rouge?

http://www.roguefitness.com/sml-3-rogue-108-monster-lite-squat-stand

Granted I think Rouge is overpriced.. but if you really want to shell out dough, get a squat rack, a bench, a barbell and some weights. IMO much better than a cable pulley system

Or both. I like having cables to incorporate for chest, triceps, and back. As long as the weight stack goes up high enough. Use them very little for biceps and shoulders. Just breaks up the monotony from time to time. And that rack is very nice. Gonna see what I come up with. I don't care to shell out the cash for a nice set up. I know it will be used.

I mostly use cables for arms and back while chest is almost entirely free weights (aside from Cable crossovers), but there's certainly no right or wrong way.

But there's a lot of science behind the big 3: Bench, Squat, Deadlift. And no one is doing the big 3 using cables. I think a squat rack still wins out, at least for strength training/mass/body building.

Granted if you have the money and room for both, absolutely go for it. Cable back exercises are some of my favs. Cable rows, One arm standing cable rows, wide grip cable rows.. plus all the lat pulldowns.. Maybe get a single pulley system?

There are tons of different variations of that thing, just FYI. And yeah a squat rack and bench for sure like I said. I just threw that out there because he was saying he could spend $5K. Not like that's what I would recommend for everyone. And yeah that was from alibaba because that's the only place that will price those things without calling a rep of Life Fitness. Just wanted to show him some numbers and options for comparison.

I worry I would get very bored with just home workouts with nothing but a bench and squat rack basically. That's why I keep a gym membership and have a decent amount of equipment at home.

Also, supplements. Lots of wonderful supplements depending on what you want. Haha, big fan of them.

Yeah haha, just joking around at this point.

Personally, I go with the home gym/work gym/fitness club membership. Sure it costs money to build the gym and on top of that about $40/month.. but it ensures I never have a reason to NOT workout. Weather bad? Workout from home. Crunched at work? Run over to the gym next door. Need something different like swimming or a basketball court? Fitness club.

Ever used ostarine? I've got a bottle and tried but it gave me unbearable head aches.

I have not ever tried ostarine. Had to look it up to be honest. Did you ever get any results or not make it far enough into it?

I'm starting to realize that diet truly is 90% of the game. I went to pick up my usual 16oz Ribeye today, anywhere between 1200-1600 calories.. and that's not exactly a *huge* piece of steak... had no clue it was this bad.

I love my supplements and they definitely help, but diet is the foundation. Bad diet can't mask the supplements you take or work you do.

100%. My diet is pretty ridiculous and improbably a little obsessive but it is definitely THE most important thing. For me it's almost a game to see how well I can do. That being said, I eat pizza and a hamburger or two every week and I'm not psycho about it like I can't eat what I want. It's just at home it's spinach, chicken, fish, yogurt, PB, beans, veggies, rice, cereal, oatmeal, some pasta and that's about it honestly. Maybe some ice cream if the gal buys it.

Who was knocking kettlebells earlier? I got two 70 lbers that do the trick.

A 50 lbs kettlebell used correctly is its own gym.

Never made it far enough into it. Guy at the supp store told me to drink a lot of water with it but **** I drink over 100 oz a day. The headaches were a killer. Supposed to be very effective and without shutdown.

Beer and alcohol is what kills me.. pretty sure I'd look like Arnold if I didn't take in 2,000 liquid calories every weekend night. But that's slowing down fast. cut back on the partying means 1. money saved. 2. more productive on weekend. 3. less caloric intake (especially empty calories) 4. not hungover for the Gym.. it's moronic what I do on weekends, but oh well.

Kettlebells: love them, but IDK about a whole body workout. They are a little spotty when it comes to chest and shoulders. The bell rests hard on my wrists. I feel like I'm never going to be able to press the same weight as a regular dumbbell or barbell. I like Kettle-bells more for HIIT type work. I've recently been doing Kettlebell Ladders with Goblet Squats and Swings.

Just getting out of a cold, as we speak.. nothing worse than being sick, with no energy to workout. I'm hoping to be back to 100% tomorrow to get a good lift/swim in.
