In that first video, the linebacker he beats for the receiving touchdown was former OU great Rod Shoate.
Washington's elusiveness was one thing, but his ability to run inside with his 180 lb. body was as amazing. Of course, he ran behind some great offensive linemen, which helped.
Yeah, the other coach had seen the act before, too. With a bigger smile Joe's freshman season.

But why though? TOSU didn't win a national championship in '74 or '75. Archie Griffin can have his back-to-back Heismans. I'm happy with back-to-back NCs, Lil Joe, Thomas Lott and the Selmon brothers!
IMO, Archie Griffin was an excellent back, but of all the running backs who have won the Heisman, I believe Griffin was the least talented.....even with his two awards. Ohio State did a great job of pimping him for the award.
Lott wasn't the quarterback. Steve Davis was.

I saw a strange youtube video two night ago. Someone had taken the '73 tie with USC game film and put it on the yt site. But the sound for more than the first half, had the fight song and typical repertoire of the Longhorn band. Fixed after halftime. Fist time I ever saw that game. Ever. It was interesting. We missed a short fg in the first half. Fulcher. USC scored first, we tied early 3rd, then they fumbled on a good drive just after we tied it at 7-7. No real treats after.
We were playing without Lee Roy because of his pericarditis. Still stuffed their offense mostly. Their only score came when we lost a fumble in the second Q.
That was the game of the strange JW punt return just before the half. I really enjoyed the punt retrn from a wider angle.
Waymon Clark had a nice game because they weren't going to allow the pitch to Joe. Davis scored OUr touchdown on an option keep left after Clark got us down there.
Student Body left didn't make much that night.
I couldn't remember if it was a Sooner play from scrimmage or a punt muff, but it was recovered by USC around the Sooner 25 I believe. And they scored in three or four plays. But you are correct. It came after we turned it over. Not a bad defensive performance missing the best player in school history.
