Wanted to try a vacation on S Lake Michigan for a change this summer. Does anyone have any suggestions? Would like around St Joe , Benton Harbour to Muskegon Mi on the water. Just need a place for two. Condo or hotel. Area. No idea, always have gone south so any help would be much appreciated

Used to date a girl who knew somebody that had a vacation house in Grand Haven. Stayed up there a couple times, she liked to hit up all the antique stores in the day and have sex at night. I would say that both were above average if that is the kind of thing you are looking for. GH was a chill little town that was pretty walkable and active, she did say that Muskegon was really nice but we never made it that far north.
Took the wife and kids one year for the same reason, i.e., always been going south, thought we would try something different. Stayed in St. Joe. There is a state park near there with gigantic, and I mean gigantic sand dunes created by the wind off the lake which was a cool place to hike. Yes, it is windy up there, so don't expect to do a lot of swimming and sun bathing, although the temperature is fine. I think Benton Harbor has a top notch golf course, seems like the Senior Open or PGA was up there a few years ago. I wouldn't necessarily go back, but it was fun for a change of pace.
Mackinac Island is one of the top vacation resorts anywhere, in the summer that is. Very high end trip, very, very expensive.
It is also not that far from Chicago, two or three hours IIRC, can pop over there for a day trip or spend a night or two on the way up or on the way back.
My dad's side of the family is from Michigan so I've been up there a lot throughout my life. If you are thinking beach vacation in Summer you may be disappointed. The beaches tend to be rough sand. The temps are often nice but the water temps are quite chilly. Makes it hard to swim.
Michigan is an outdoorsman's Mecca. Lots of State/National parks everywhere. Stellar fishing, hiking, hunting. Lots of historical lighthouses and Native American landmarks. If you go with this in mind you won't be disappointed.

He's speaking in the past tense about a future event, imagining himself in, say, this September, reflecting on what will have already been. I don't know how you guys would phrase that, but it makes sense to me.
Cherry festival in traverse city is great. The homestead resort is beautiful. The big bear sand dunes....all of that stuff. Just gorgeous.
