I’ve said all along, and starting decades ago when it wasn’t even an option, that I wouldn’t ever want AI reffing. My argument was that even if the technology got to where it could call a perfect game, you could never remove human graft from the equation. So we could never be more than one hack away from electronically enforced cheating.

But after Tuesday night I feel like I stand corrected. Maybe AI can only be better than that until it’s hacked, but I’m willing to take my chances.

How can I believe NCAA has what it takes to recognize humans with integrity while they run an in-house culture of corruption?

AI would do great but ruin the game.

There’s violations on every possession by every team.

Calling every violation and every foul would be 8-10 hour games and finish with a couple players from each team still available.

Just hire competent officials. Have standards for those officials and hold them accountable to those standards.


It’s not that hard.

The SEC just doesn’t care.

There are plenty of things that could improve the game through technology while still having human refs. Out of bounds, goal tending, clock issues, etc. Foul calls could get there too eventually. Train the AI on a few million video clips of what constitutes a foul. Tweak tolerance levels for optimized game experience.

I actually think football is the best sport to have AI get involved. The technology is probably already there to never have to argue about a bad spot of the ball or whether a first down was achieved or not.

Oh I agree completely. They don’t have what it takes.

I just think it’s funny that AI is quickly becoming society’s answer to everything. And people still consider “The Terminator” to be wacky, far-fetched SciFi, even though we are hurdling toward that reality at breakneck speed.
