I'm not convinced he was a great play caller either but I could be in the minority

No. Barkley had to fight for yards; just go back and watch the stupid stand still hand offs - we won in spite of Moorhead’s gimmicky nonsense:
The still handoffs still give me nightmares
My nightmare is Rahne calling the handoff to Saunders on the last chance play against OSU at home when McSorley was unstoppable

Good passing concepts, but his short yardage run concepts(the standstill 7 yard deep handoff to backs) was MADENING. I'm certain we would have won some big games, on talent alone, if JOEMO could have ever gotten over his hubris and put the QB under center.

it was a good call but the blocking scheme they used was horrible!! And they had years to work on it!! OSU did the same thing on D for years! That play should have busted for a TD! If they blocked it correctly!
the problem was imo, Joe wanted to draw up the blocking schemes, and he didnt know how!!
You know, the more i look back on his tenure the more i tend to agree with you on this
If someone on this board suddenly announced they had won the lottery, the collective immediate reaction would be "Oh my, the taxes you will have to pay!!!"

Great players make great plays in big games. You do not run at the best defensive player in football with the game on the line.
if you are referring to Chase Young, as we now know, he wasnt all that great of a player. PSU had to know what D OSU was going to run, as they ran it in this game, and the prior 2 yrs. They had to know that the T/E stunt was coming. and even if it doesnt , all the more better. Instead of the TE turning out on the OLB/C he needed to try to occupy the DE. The C , OG and OT should have attached the 3 tech. As such, they would have had everybody blocked, and the C would have has a prefect angle on the DE. the hole pops open and off to the races Boobie goes!
One in the same. When I was a high school athletics director in the 1980s, our BB team had a good point guard named ....you guessed it. The cheerleaders and students would chant" more head "every time he scored. I had to keep a straight face and pretend I had no clue what was going on.
The pain I would have winning the $1B powerball... writing that $0.25+ billion check to the government... and my resignation letter to work on the same day.
