imho the Alabama game will be the gut check of the Stoops era. I'll be happy with either the defense holding the Tide to 35 or fewer - or offense scoring 35 or more.

We play AT Alabama. Why that game? We need to beat Mississippi State or Vandy first to even begin to have that conversation. Lay off the sauce. Read what you type out loud before pressing that send button. Alabama will destroy us and should.

I see just the opposite. If I was CMS, I'd work to prepare the kids but try to de-stress this game. Just go out there and have fun. Playing loose is their only chance against such a team.

  1. The gut-checks for us are USC, MSU, Missouri,Vandy. Those are the games that will be the difference between success and failure.

Unfortunately, I think we have to include our first game in that category, as well.

Alabama? You're looking at Alabama, at their place, to be a "gut check" for us?

Better hope we get out of there without major injuries. Where do these ideas come from?

5-7 the past two seasons. Alabama is the least of our worries for the upcoming season.

I will say offseason does some things to our fans

Always does. And the reasoning for such nonsense ends up being things like: we are due, you gotta have faith, the law of averages, etc.

If we truly want this program to climb up the SEC ladder, it needs consistent wins against the SEC East and UL, not pie-in-the-sky once-in-a-lifetime upsets over LSU and Bama.

Bama likes to disembowel teams so a check to see if you have your guts would be in order.

I just hope we come out of that one injury free. I'm going to say that one gets ugly. Definitely not a "gut check" game. We will be bringing a knife to a gun fight in that one, I'm afraid.

Gut check is So Miss.....G5 school with a history of playing P5 schools tough. We will need to prepare and play like a FB team to win. Haven't seen that version of the Cats in a while. I hope the new coaches can get the offense together.

Everything rides on that first game.....we lose that game and we're in a death spiral.....likely 1-4 after Bama going into the Vandy game. Win against So Miss, maybe build a little confidence and we might be 3-1....at worst 2-2 going into the Bama game.

Don't see us hanging w/the Tide at Bama with our recent history and on field performance....but getting beaten by the Tide is in keeping with most teams that travel to Tuscaloosa. The surrounding games are much more important...starting with the first one.

GBB!.

I have lived here in Alabama since 78, I would be able to die in peace if that happened.

Would you have died in peace if UK had upset Bama at their place in Hartlines junior year? It could very well have happened if the one ill advised play hadn't given them the TD.

Also the next year at UK when Micah stopped their Heisman trophy winner on the goal line with us trailing by a single point with about five minutes left in the half, it could have been a safety, certainly a matter of a couple of inches, then they drove the FULL LENGTH of the field (longest scoring drive in history IMO) for a score with about a minute in the half and then scored on D on a fluke play with seconds remaining.

The old IFFING game, If we had got the Safety we would have had the lead AND probably good field position, and they almost certainly wouldn't have had time to drive the length of the field or score the 2nd TD. IF we had extended the lead at the half even if only a FG we might have played inspired ball and fought them off the second half, as it was it was close to a stalemate the second half.

That is one thing I love about football, always a chance, but Bama is MUCH better overall than they were back then, five of six #1 in the nation recruiting classes (plus second the one they didn't finish first), so don't hold your breath.

But if they have much better talent now then so do we, too bad we started so far behind them, huh mitch.

And oh, OP, if we scored 35 on them I would be deliriously happy for a week.

I think the gut checks will be UT, UGA, Vandy, Florida, and UL...

I don't know that an Alabama win or loss tells us anything...beating the tide would be great, but it would be the blind squirrel finding a nut...and a loss would just be a loss to defending national champs...

we don't play bama often enough for the game to have significant meaning...

I'm more interested to see if we can start competing with and beating the east opponents and our in state rival...

All CATS SEC games will be gut checks! If our staff specially coach Stoops has learned and improve I expect CATS to be competitive across the board! I was in Tusk Town last time and UK team asked no quarter and gave none!

Yep. Bama is so physical. Last time we played them, we lost a few key players; Whitlow (the starting QB) being one iirc.

Id love to see us win. But just dont see it, especially on the road.
