He will likely hang on to break the record, sad to say. He has taken 1100 more shots than 99 and his shooting % is 12.9 compared to 99's ridiculous 17.6.

This is obviously a very respectable record. I give huge props to Ovechkin for getting there.

That said…

Go look at Wayne‘s points record (and assists, for that matter.) Will never be touched.

I'm a Capitals fan but you would have to be a mad man to make the claim that Ovechkin is better than Gretzky. I think Barry Sanders was a better running back than Emmitt Smith but Smith is the one with the record.

99 took 1800 less shots than Ovechkin. 99 with a higher shooting %.....17.6 to 13.1.
