I think we should get rid of one letter, just so U would go away.
It was up $45 in after hours trading on the announcement. As a big investor (lol, bought a few shares in 2009) in Google, I am glad they did it.
Google makes money. The other crap these guys do doesn't.
It's a high tech Berkshire Hathaway.
Google makes money NOW, but they need to win some "alpha" "bets" (get it?) with other businesses before the ad money spigot runs dry and they become another Silicon Graphics, Sun, or... Microsoft.
They're not spinning off everything in order to cut the fat. They have enough cash to make big long bets and avoid being tied up with as many regulations this way.
I'm hoping Apple makes a play at Search ad revenue. They could buy Yahoo for a drop in the bucket and probably double the revenue they are getting currently.I hope so, I'm not too thrilled with the change. You are correct though, the ad spigot may run out, but it is highly unlikely to do so for the next 15+ years...
Don't think so. Just separate division. Are they shielding the main company by spinning projects like the self-driving cars into separate companies in case it ends up killing people?
Don't think so. Just separate division.

USWeb/CKS that eventually merged with a group out of Chicago that became marchFIRST.
You still in the Chicago area?I survived the first two cuts but not the third. It led to a better job but I had to pay for my lunch daily and I couldn't go down and play pool whenever I wanted.
It was a fun time but I was just a lowly group coordinator. Can't even remember what I did but it wasn't much. Wish I would have taken that time to learn some computer skills.
Looks like the building we were in is no longer there. It was on 17th between Park and Irving just past the W.
