"Please don't shoot me."

Again, if you are so frightened of potential physical confrontation that you'd preemptively shoot someone 5 times, then you never should have been a cop in the first place. Especially considering (a) he was begging you not to shoot him, and (b) he could see his hands.

Police agencies really need to up their standards for who they allow to wear a badge and carry a gun.

Can't wait for the apologists to come along and explain why this guy had it coming to him.

Sounds like the a-hole is getting what he deserves. What else do you want? Burn him alive? Get rid of all police?

The OP is a bleeding heart liberal with little understanding of the law or how the legal system protects those of us more appreciative of our military and police force. Probably supports Bernie Sanders and Obama too.

Most likely will change his opinions once he's out of his early 20's, moves out of his parent's house, has worked a few years for an honest living and paid taxes. Don't get sucked into their rhetoric--no different than the Jane Fonda's of the late 60's.

I can't speak for all 5.0 because I've encountered some great ones, but a lot of those dudes have daddy/little man/anger issues that need to be addressed before given "au-thor-a-tie".

From my experiences, the smaller those dudes are, the more they woof, flex nuts and make the "YOU WANNA GO TO !@#$%$ JAIL?!?" threats over simple stuff like smart-assery from the "subject."

But, this dude was farrrred and is charged with murder. That's about as much as the public can ask for. (Now, when he walks because he "feared for his safety" of his "life was in jeopardy" or whatever excuses they use to cover their asses, then we can raise hell.)

Sorry in advance VTRondo.

Endless wars have produced thousands of ex-military fresh out of combat zones moving into the police departments across the country. They have changed the culture. Combine that with the huge influx of military hardware into police departments across the country due to 9/11 by the newly created Department of Homeland Security and you have police departments on steroids mad with power and looking for any opportunity to use it. Out of control.

I don't think he should have shot him, he should of had him lay still and searched him. The part about making people move and then shooting them when they make the wrong move isn't the best course of action. That said the cop was fired and charged with murder. What more are you looking for?

Better standards. I realize that it won't happen overnight.

Not sure you can have a higher standard than firing and charging with murder. No lack of accountability from that department. I question the policy of making him crawl towards you then shooting the guy. That's a policy issue though.

Perhaps I should have phrased it as better hiring standards. I'm talking about measures before we get to the point of dead bodies. I have no issues with how this is being handled otherwise.

Google says that the average police academy training is 21 weeks (5 months). Cosmetology schools are 8 months to 2 years. One lets you carry a gun to shoot the bad guys. The other lets you play with someones hair.

I think you're being naive there. Not privy to their policies but I don't believe they complete training, hand them a gun and out on the street alone they go. There is probably a grace period by a department where they complete some additional training. You have to also consider the job, it's not one that's going to attract only the kind of people we all would like to have the job. Most people would rather not risk their life everyday. They said he had a clean record but you know they tend to not report a lot of stuff.

Imo the solution for police is to have a completely separate council review of their performances. This group would not be housed in the PD and would not consist of police officers. You would still have to deal with what they cover up but they should have access to all complaints filed.

It is becoming a more violent world and being a cop on the street today probably needs more training then just 5 months. Maybe they do in OJT with a ride along or something but who knows. They are also in more danger than they used to be with the current hate many have for them. Rock and a hard place really. A fine line has to be walked.

Warrior, you got a link to support that about this place becoming more violent?

The stats disagree.

One stat that is overwhelming is the increase in cop on citizen violence.
I am talking about the violence towards cops and the recent hate being spewed. They are being targeted more lately it seems. But I do concede violent crimes are down in this country according to most stats. I stand corrected there.

I have no idea what goes on in training police officers, but it appears to me that officers are taught to not take any chances with your life. I'm pro police for the most part, but due to the internet, information about the bad things officers do is more personified.

A few years ago, I took a concealed carry class and was surprised at how the police officers instructing the class were so "gung ho" about shooting a perpetrator and ask questions later. They told us to do the same thing. I understand "not taking chances with your life", but a little common sense needs to infused also. There are so many cases where the officers are shooting people with the least amount of provocation, even when they are trying to flee and posing no danger to the officer.

A couple years ago, I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. As I was standing there, I looked out the window and saw a light flash in my barn. I told my wife what was going on, threw some clothes on and grabbed my gun. As I stealthily approached the barn, a young man came walking around the corner of the barn. I leveled my gun at him, told him not to move and ask him what was going on. About that time, a girl comes around the barn and I tell her not to move and asked what they were doing. As it turns out, they were looking for a place to have sex. They were two high school teenagers and friends of my son. Sure, if this had been "Bonnie and Clyde", the girl could have come around the barn with guns ablazing and I may not get a chance to get a shot off, but I wasn't going to shoot anyone unless I felt my life was threatened. Taking the life of anyone is a serious decision, although there are many that deserve it.

Like I said, I'm definitely pro police, but there seems to be a change in how officers are trained and common sense in many cases is lacking.

I guess that's one way of looking at it. Another way of looking at it, is that cops have been violent the entire time, but due to technology, we are now catching these perverters of law. I think there has always been an abundance of cop on citizen violence. It's just now, we actually are getting evidence. I respect them. Glad we have them, but they aren't the victims, Warrior. We the citizens are.

They killed 1,207 citizens in 2015. One could say, that cops are more of a danger than terrorists. The stats don't lie.

At one point, the report stated, he tried to raise his body.

“If you do that again, we are shooting you,” an officer said, according to the report. “Do you understand?”

Shaver responded: “No, please don’t shoot me.”

The report stated that “multiple voices” began to say “don’t” as “Shaver’s hand moved back toward the front of his body.”

I'm not a statistician, but I've listened to cops 100% of the time and haven't been shot 100% of the time. I think there's a pattern..

I feel as though my chances of being shot by a cop is about equal to getting shot by a bad guy. I try to stay out of bad/dangerous places and try to obey the law/not cause trouble, so the probability of either happening is low, but about equal.

My personal rule. Avoid ANY interactions with the police if I can.

I've said this before on here, 93. When dealing with the police, you will have what I call the Big 3 that can happen.

Lose your life
Lose your freedom
Lose your money

The less I am around cops, the better off my chances with the Big 3.

Yeah and if you're not breaking the law what are the odds of any of those things happening? Especially, when you do interact with the police, that you follow their instructions?

Yeah, a 10 mph speeding ticket ends up being a potential opportunity for the cop to shoot you. Even by following orders.

as for following the instructions, that's my point. People are getting killed following instructions. The evidence is out there. For every Michael Brown that is lawfully killed, there are others like Tamir Rice, no knock warrants that end in murder, Rumain Brisbon that were murdered.

Thankfully body cams are here. Hopefully it will become law that every police officer in the U.S will have to wear one and if tampered, then it gets sent to an independent review board to determine if the cop has sufficent reasons as to why the camera was turned off or technical difficulties happened with it.

The cop's I've spoken with unanimously want body cams. Not sure they will have the results people think. Douchebag cops will expose themselves eventually.. But i bet body cams will she'd a worse light on the offenders.. The scum that police deal with in the regular.

I think that's perfectly fine. Hopefully, no one out there wants anything but the truth of what happens in particular interactions.

If an offender deserved to be shot, I'd prefer there be evidence that eliminates any arguments that the cop did something wrong.

If the cop murdered someone, I'd prefer they not get away with it.

sadness in these stories. too much. The woman that called the cops was in her perfect right to do so, but I hope she is aware of the result.

Well that there is part of the problem. Funny the one guy claimed the OP was a liberal, yet what a lot of police work entails is collecting money for the.....government. Some laws are in place just be able to place fines. That's where some of you are sheep thinking just bc it's a law it's right. Plus, police aren't lawyers, it's not their jib to interpret laws..and many of them instead of preventing or stopping crime..look to find reasons to cite people.

If you want a fix to some police, get rid of their unions. They'll have to think a little harder before they try to act like a cowboy when if they have to worry more about more then paid leaves.
