“so I looked at (Brian Fitzpatrick) and Willis (Mackey Jr.), and I was like, ‘Hey, which one of you can I trust to handle JQ with gloves in the post?’ And both of them were kind of pale, and neither one of them wanted the assignment at all. Not because they worried about hurting him, but because they worried about getting hurt.”

Sorry, but this stuff is just silly! By the time Pope lets JQ on the court in an actual game, he’s going to be so rusty, the first time he stumbles or falls making a play, Pope will probably pull him and shut him down for the season.

Pope has been conditioned by his personal family life to freak out over a broken fingernail, and it translates into his professional life!

JQ is a defensive minded player. If he was going to need to be relied on for offense I’d say your “rusty” comment may apply a little. He isn’t though and I’ve never heard of anyone being rusty on the defensive end, JQ will be fine once he returns and he will most definitely be a game changer.

Bit of a drama queen are we?

Well, at least Pope will play him. If it was Cal, he wouldn't even put him on the court, so he could protect his future earning potential.

For anybody that's bashing the defense it's top 12 in the country Ken Pom. So is the offense.

They may have lost two games but those top 12 numbers in both those categories means this team has a high ceiling. And they haven't even had their point guard or starting center.
The eyeball test tells a completely different story. They’ve played 2 teams with a pulse and didn’t look as if they belonged on the court with either.

A terrible 3 point shooting team in MSU looked like a bunch of Steph Curry’s against our weak defense. I was there watching that in person and it was BAD!

This is not a comment on Pope, necessarily... but I would advise dispensing with the updates about 2 vs. 2, 3 vs. 3, etc. Just state a date when JQ is expected to be ready and stick to it.

Pretty simple stuff. When the Doctor says it’s 100% healed, he’s good to go. 100% means it’s as good, and maybe better, than it was before he injured it.

Seriously man? Four of the 6 games are Kenpom teams from about 225-350. Surely you get that, right? In the two games against teams with a pulse, they graded horribly bad.

Yeah, Pope comes across as a little goofy about this stuff. I'll say this, if his "live" drill still have to be managed by GA's, they're not all that live. He's still a good 4-6 weeks out I'd guess.

A few years back we smashed KU and UNC early in the season. They made the title game.

These early games mean less than nothing. This team will be just fine.

It's hard for me to hear Pope talk about physicality when both of his teams at UK and all of his BYU teams have been soft and horrible at defense.
Last year's squad ended up doing very well on defense by the end of the season despite being so unathletic.

This year's team has yet to kick into any sort of gear, but the athleticism is there to shut other squads down.

I know we expect results immediately in this society, but I saw improvement from Pope's best BYU team to his first UK team. Until Pope gives me a season of a reason to believe that he can't figure this out, I'm supporting him.

If the defense turns it around this year like they did last year, I hope plenty of folks will stick around and admit that they got ahead of themselves. Granted, we've looked as bad as can be against teams with a pulse, but the season isn't over yet.

You guys complain about not getting any updates regarding injuries and when Pope gives us an update, you still complain. Not sure where all of these drama queens came from...
No complaint here. I'm merely suggesting the only update that is needed is for them to designate when they expect him to be ready to play. If I were Pope, I would avoid getting sucked into discussing details of how many guys he played against today vs. yesterday, etc. It just provides more unnecessary material for people to dissect and mischaracterize. Just say you expect him to be ready to go January 1st, or something to that effect, and be done with it.

Agree, and it doesn’t have to be a drop dead date. If he were to say most likely mid December to early January I’d be super happy.

Every time I've seen JQ "practicing", he's still showing a mild limp. I simply don't see him playing one game at UK this year. The draft is WAY more important for these kids and their "handlers" than any college game. He reinjures that knee in that one game, his NBA draft status is toast.

I guess that's a catch point too because people complain that they're not hearing enough updates and half out of confusion about when and if he will come back

Anyone who thinks our D against louisville and Michigan State was good is clueless.
Reading comprehension is your friend. He said we are only ranked high because we played cupcakes. That’s part of the algorithm, so regardless of how bad it may have been in those two games it isn’t that bad. Eye test can lie but numbers don’t, it’s simple really. I never said it was good in those games, simply stating the numbers equate for competition. So whether it’s a top 10 team or 300th ranked it computes that which makes the post I replied to make no sense.

Numbers also told Mark Pope that Brandon Garrison was our second most efficient offensive player.

He literally has zero limp
