Why can't some of these companies take a proactive approach and beef up their security before a hack happens. Seems like they always do it after the fact.

I was one of the people that had their information stolen. I did get a year of free Life Lock credit monitoring so that's something I guess.

I just changed my social security number so this isn't going to be a problem for me at all.

We received an email about this at work. In that same email we were encouraged to sign up for an online Anthem account if we haven't already. I'll get right on that!

It's only a matter of time before the ss# becomes meaningless because it's been hacked so many times. Not much of secret number if Grigor in Romania knows it, your address, your birthday, your mother's maiden name, etc., and is right now opening AMEX cards in your children's names.

Pretty amazing that ~ 15 years ago your SSN was on your driver's license and many places wouldn't take a personal check without it. Hell, I had mine printed on the checks because I got tired of writing it on there.

You already heard? I have Anthem and was wondering how long it would take to get that if you were harmed.

Every company takes measures to attempt and thwart hackers. Hacking is like...just another form of terrorism where your security can prevent 10,000 attempted hacks but in only takes one successful hack to do damage.

If you've lived in the state of KY for a while, you might have had Blue Cross Blue Shield of KY prior to being bought by Anthem, and you probably were part of it.

Anthem usually pays renewals to Agents the last week of the month. It didn't come in January and when I inquired, no one could tell me why. I guess the Chinese has stolen my money too.

Anthem was fined 1.7M in 2010 for not having enough protection against hackers on their systems.

FWIW they think it may have been China. I think I may go on a personal boycott of all their ****. I suppose that means never shopping at Wal-Mart again.

I have stopped giving out my social to Dr's. offices and the like after finding out it was totally unnecessary and they basically just want it to track you down if you don't pay a bill. I'm curious to know why the insurance companies need your social security number in the first place.

I would say that insurance companies needs to verify who you are and pull up your medical history from MIB(Medical Info Bureau)

I cringe every time I look at an item and it says "Made In China".

Easiest way to make money is to create a demand, then fill it.

Wonder how many hackers Lifelock employs?

Companies don't wanna spend the money it takes to be proactive on securing their data. They just cross their fingers and get their apology statements ready.

Just like you'd think our credit cards would have had the european style chip and pin system years ago.

i'm in the tech world it amazes me sometimes what passes for an IT person. All it takes is one weak link to click on that cat video from a chinese server and bam...you got virtual AIDS

Just read read an article that stated Anthem didn't even bother to encrypt the social security numbers. I hope someone files a class action lawsuit against them.

At a summer job I had back in the early 90s, the company had a 4th of July celebration for all the employees. We were given little pins to wear that were in the form of American flags - with "MADE IN CHINA" stamped on the back of them.

Yeah, I got an email from anthem as well.

Why the eff should we ever give a social security # again? Just do away with them and find some way to do voice recognition or something. If my gym can recognize my handprint so I can enter then they can verify my identity without a SS number. Now I'm sure my credit will have some new **** popped up on it soon like loans for Chinese fireworks, Chinese cars, penis pump factories in Asia, and Skype.

My father is a banker at a smaller regional bank in EKY. He said their firewall gets hit millions of time a day. I can't even fathom how many times a company like Anthem gets hit every hour. The point is if their is any type of weakness even for a few minutes someone will find out and get whatever they can get too. Encryption is crucial and a huge field in mathematics eight now. If you can come up with huge prime numbers and prove that they are prime than you would be worth your weight in gold to corporate America.

That's true. Anthem was fined 1.7M in 2010 for not having required protections.

Now I see where Turbo Tax is taking a hit. Lot of people are not gonna file online anymore.
