Not unreasonable in terms of general human motivation, but I see some problems with it in this situation.
1 - How would these disgruntled Cal players have access to recruits, and visa versa? Seems like a major hurdle.
2 - Who would be motivated to do this? Most Cal players speak very well of him afterwards, including half the guys who transfer?
3 - Who has a believable story they could tell to have influenced recruiting the way we’re seeing? Remember, it’s only for big men where our recruiting has dropped off. Cal himself said he should have used Skal differently and we could make a case that he could have used Bam differently since it was just reported he surprised his management by showing a well developed face up game even when he first got to the league. But both those guys went lottery. Is a recruit really gonna be convinced Cal hurt one of their careers? Who else? We all watched Cal try to use SKJ both inside and outside and the kid couldn’t play. So someone’s gonna believe he would have shone if not for Cal? Isaac Humphries is viciously texting kids from Australia?
Again, a hypothesis like this is not impossible in the general course of human events. But I don’t see any reasonable way to apply it to this situation in a way that has any meaningful effect at all.
In my opinion our recruiting has dropped off for some very obvious reasons, with a few less certain reasons possibly also contributing:
1 - Cal totally flubbed his chance coaching the U19 Team USA. It happened. It also coincides exactly with the beginning of our recruiting woes. It sucks and Cal knows it sucks but oh well. Life goes on.
2 - WW Wes and Orlando Antigua both dropped out of the picture roughly the same time frame. You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to admit good recruiting was attributed to both of them and now they’re both gone.
There are other factors that are surely playing a role. But to me none of them are so cut and dry as those two, and none of them fit the timeline of our troubles so well.
