No help here, but when I was stationed in Turkey, took some leave time, hitched a ride on a mail plane and spent a few days there. That was almost 60 years ago. The Acropolis was the thing I most remember. A little later, they thought Turkey and Greece were going to war. They are historically bitter enemies. We were told to pack our gear and be ready to deploy in one hours notice. Worked 12 hours on and 12 hours off for 3 months without a day off till things calmed down.

I wonder what kind of jobs there are in the world for people who just want to travel the globe. Drug mule? Organ harvester? There must be some that allow for sightseeing.

According to the social media feeds of most drop dead gorgeous female social media influencers that must be on the list

You'd be shocked. Look up digital nomads on youtube. Young people live in a world we don't really understand. If my health holds up my wife and I plan to retire to Koh Samui, Thailand. SE Asia is crawling with digital nomads.

Looks like I’m going for 5 days in late May.

Any recommendations on things to do there, other than the obvious historical sites ?
For our 30th anniversary, my wife and I took a 10-day Mediterranean cruise back in Oct 2023, with several days in Rome both before and after the cruise. We made stops in Athens (actually docked in a suburb named Piraeus), Santorini, Mykonos, and Katakolo. Basically, our ship would dock early in the morning, then we would spend the day in port and get back on the boat late afternoon / early evening.

The cruise company had local tour companies to provide various options. For Athens, my wife and I simply took a bus from the boat into downtown Athens. Prior to the downtown, we made a 20-minute stop at the site of the 1896 Olympic Stadium. Once downtown, we hiked up to the Acropolis, checked it out, came back down for shopping etc. The Acropolis was cool to see up close, but the overall vibe of Athens was kinda meh in my opinion.

If you have the option to take a side trip I would definitely recommend spending a day at Mykonos.

Yes but only stayed 2 nights as we were on a Catamaran vacation. Which I would highly recommend.
Very busy city with tons of traffic. Make sure you don't get run over if walking.

The Athens Hilton is very nice. Has a great outdoor restaurant on top where you can see all of Athens.
You gotta do the Acropolis. Some good walking though.
Greek soccer season runs till May. Might be cool to hit up a game.
The Stavros Niarchos Park is very nice.
I would always recommend taking a ferry to Mykonos or Santorini.

Cool city, have fun.

Sounds amazing. My wife and I enjoy going over the Europe, and a cruise like that is on our bucket list. We are heading to Belgium and Amsterdam in a few weeks and really looking forward to it.

After our stops in Greece, we made a stop in Malta. A scheduled stop in Messina (Sicily) was cancelled due to weather. We then stopped in Naples, Florence, and Livorno (Pisa) before heading back to Civiatechia (sp?), our disembarking point.

Great trip with just a few hiccups.

Spent 10 days in Greece a year ago, two in Athens. As stated above, outside Acropolis & archeological museum, pretty bland. There is Mars Hills too where St. Paul is believed to have preached. I understand decent beaches are not too far. There are other archeological sites (Mt. Olympus) & ancient monasteries out in the country that you may be able to take day trips too. The entire countryside is rocky, hills, mountains with olive trees everywhere. We visited 3 islands on cruise ship as part of the tour. Santorini was overwhelmed. Crete was nice. Overall, worthwhile trip but prefer many other places in Europe and not inclined to go back.

In my business (Wall St), I have dealt with older folks who traveled, for almost 38 years.

The only 2 spots that I have NEVER heard a negative story about are Alaska and Australia (?).

Greece pretty consistently gets a "meh"... its dirty, people are not particularly friendly (at least to America tourists), and food/safety/cleanliness standards are not always acceptable. The views can be STUNNING, and the history... well, its well documented and maybe second to none.

I know a guy that is constantly in other countries. For months if not years at a time. He rents rooms and works doing odd jobs around town to pay (he literally lived with someone for a month just working around the house to pay the rent).

Now what I can’t figure out is how the hell he got started in the first place. He was working full time at a wal mart with nothing special going on in his life. Finished school, got a new job with his degree, and about a year later off he went.

I’ve always heard that as well. But my family members that have been to Greece all said it was their favorite place in Europe to visit

Agree on AK. Been twice.

As for Oz, glad I went and it's nice, but I wasn't overwhelmed to the extent I ever want to go again. Italy tops for me with both France & Spain up there. Suisse is beautiful but ungodly expensive. Headed to Portugal in a couple of months.

Wifey and I went on an anniversary trip in late 2023. We absolutely loved florence, rome's vatican and old churches, monte carlo casino, and the south of France near the ocean. We did not care much for northern portugal, near porto.
