Would you pick this over a trip to the northeast? Arcadia etc.

Wife and I had a trip booked there last year, but had to cancel because I knocked her up and the trip was too close to the due date. I've heard it's an awesome place to go. If you are looking at going, check out the "Stopover" they advertise at the top of their page. You basically use Reykjavik as your layover on your way to another destination, but you can stay there up to 7 days as part of the layover. One of the best deals in travel.

I did the stopover with my now wife back in 2013 on our way to Norway and beyond, and I couldn't recommend it more. We're actually looking to go back soon; it's only about 5 hours from NYC. Recommend a good tour and a visit to Blue Lagoon for a day. If you're going in the summer, I highly recommend going out bar hopping until 7 am. Had a friend go in December and she did a cross country skiing and whale watching combined trip. And I recommend a non-hotel - use a hostel or better yet a daily apartment. Much better rates, and you get a touch of local culture and see the neighborhoods. Try the rotten shark!

Edit: you can fly back on Icelandic Air from Amsterdam as part of the Stopover program, if that's your thing. Cool city, just watch out for the dangerous combination of bikes, cars, and light rail. Norway is also amazing, but expensive.

I too learned that from The Mighty Ducks Franchise. Really can't say enough good things about those films. Quack, Quack.

Back in the 80's, Iceland was beyond awesome (women-wise). 30 years later, I've heard that they don't put out like they did in the glory years. Pity. And I spent 4 weeks in Thule Air Base in Greenland TDY to the Air Force. Even with being able to drink 24/7...it sucked.

^ One of my best friends in the Air Force got a Keflavik assignment, then blew it by getting a DUI 4 weeks before leaving. Las Vegas and bad decisions killed a lot of young Airmen's dream PCS assignments. I know Keflavik was on my list ever since I read "Red Storm Rising."

Fill your bathtub full of ice then put a space heater next to it, then hop in and voila you've successfully saved a bundle by just simulating Iceland.

Trivia: Iceland totally destroyed their economy by adopting trickle down economics.

I've done a few layovers in Iceland, so only got to hangout for there for 24 hours. But I loved it. Great nightlife, relaxation and adventure. I hate flying, so a trip has to be worth it. 5 hours to an amazing European country? Absolutely. And I would even pick that over Vegas/Westcoast, a similar length of flight.

However, not sure what you mean by "northeast" and "arcadia".. Are you trying to compare Vermont to Iceland?

i stopped in Iceland for plane refueling several times - corporate leased 737 couldn't make it all the way to Europe. Zero trees. Stark can be beautiful.

Lived in MA for two years back in the day. Have visited since.
- Boston worth a couple days. Freedom Trail great if you care about history at all. Fenway game?
- Day trip to Nantucket from Hyannis good. Haven't done Martha's.
- Acadia worth 2-3 days. Coastline craggy with drops. Bar Harbor is for the yuppie rich.
- Baxter State Park is good but remote. Had to drive 50 miles on rutted gravel roads each way.
- Mt. Washington hike good.
- Berkshires have a soft beauty to them. Like Williamstown & its Modern Art Museum.
- Drove around Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island. Felt like we were at the end of the earth.
- Tides at Bay of Fundy remarkable
- Of course baseball Hall of Fame, Saratoga Race Track, Niagara
- Montreal & Quebec City very good.
- Intended to see Newport Mansions, but got shut out by Jazz Festival.
