Anyone own or tried out a Sleep Number bed?

I like a mattress to have support but also be cushy. My wife, on the other hand, would be happy sleeping on a concrete slab. We have though about getting a Sleep Number bed so we can each adjust according to our preference. Have you tried one and how did you like it?

When did mattress sales become high pressure/commision based sales, completely financable purchases?
Outlaw this and the prescription drug ads.

We have had one for about 3-4 years and it's great. I like it a lot and my wife absolutely loves it. Expensive but come with a 25 year warranty and will last forever.

Never tried one, but always wondered how ell they maintain the air pressure settings. I have a tempur-pedic, it has pluses and minuses.

I have wondered that myself. If the pressure leaks off does a a compressor kick in to adjust and if so how loud is it?

We've had one for about 7 years now. No complaints whatsoever. As for leaking, I'v'e never had it lose any air, or at least not enough to notice. They are a really nice air mattress with 2 chambers, and a pump you can control via remote. I think ours came with a 20 year warranty.

A hotel I stayed in a few years back had sleep number mattresses. I thought they sucked personally. Nothing more than a glorified air mattress with a noisy pump. I dont like the air pressure shifting around when you move, it just had that weird camp mattress bounce to it.

Have you and your wife tried an old school memory foam mattress? It might bridge the gaps based on your different desires.

Wait it out. Unless you divorce, one of you will eventually be sleeping in the family room recliner.

Got one and it cost more than some used cars. It should last 25 years and praying it doesn't tear up when we move as it is worth more to my wife than me and my son combined no doubt.

Never owned one but tried out the Sleep Number version that was on sale a number of years ago (was like $699). It felt horrible in the store. I imagine they are only good if you go after the higher end versions. I just don't spend high end money on mattresses though because my bad back hasn't found a mattress yet that it feels good to lay on and don't want to risk wasting all that money.

I absolutely hate mattress shopping. No mattress I have ever brought home has felt the same as it did it the store. Either the store ones are broken in and feel better because of it, the quality of the store version is better than the ones you actually get, or the conditions at home don't match at the store.

I know a memory foam mattress I tried out at the store felt great but was horrible at home. Only lying on it for like 5 or 10 minutes isn't the same as 7 or 8 hours. The thing felt hard as a rock and I think how cold we kept our bedroom caused that. Plus I always seem to be real hot when I sleep and sinking down into a mattress likely won't help with that.

I honestly feel like going old school and get a waterbed (the semi waveless kind). I'd imagine it would be the best for keeping temperatures down and also not be hard as a rock or have a lot of pressure points. They are relatively cheap as well (seen the whole bed and mattress at a hot tub store for under $1,000 or a little more).

I didn't realize they still made water beds. I had one back in the day but it wasn't the semi waveless type. It was like sleeping on a float on Lake Cumberland during Poker Run weekend. 😆

WARNING......Physical Therapist alert......

I get this question A LOT.........mattresses and pillows......

1. For starters, everyone has different needs. The theoretical perfect is to keep the spine in alignment.

Same for pillows....

And as you would expect, mattress and pillow needs vary on your body size, shape, co-morbidities, etc.

2. The greatest benefit of Sleep Number beds is that you and your wife can have different settings. They're probably one of the best "theoretical perfect" options out there.

3. There are some cons of Sleep Number beds though. They are very expensive and most couples can do just as well going back to the 1950's and having 2 beds in a room which would be a much, much cheaper option.

Another draw back is that you can change your "number" on the fly. When it comes to activities like sleeping, the human body likes consistency. If someone is constantly playing with the firmness, it can lead to a host of aches/pains. Or, the commercial where the wife adjusts the husband's bed to stop him from snoring..........yikes, it might stop them from snoring, but then the husband wakes up with a back or neck pain.....or a headache.

4. Be wary of the memory foam folks. Memory foam mattresses often bring a "Love it or hate it" reaction. First, in general they are hot......which some love or hate. Also, as stated above, if the mattress gives too much in the wrong places, then the spine gets out of alignment which can cause problems.

For those people that move a lot while they sleep. Often the foam mattress will enable better sleep which means that you won't move as much. However, equally as often some gets worse sleep because you're stuck in a hole trying to change positions.

The reason why I say to be wary of memory foam folks is that often they sell their mattress hard. To them, getting a foam mattress was life changing and they can't understand any viewpoint to the contrary. Foam mattresses can be awesome.....but they're certainly not for everyone.

5. You body and your mattress changes over time. In general, people keep their mattress faaaaaar too long. Over time the mattress will change it's efficacy.......and you will change your body shape.

“For the best night’s sleep in the whole wide world, visit MyPillow dot com” :p

Seriously, wife and I stopped in a Sleep Number store and checked them out. Seems like a good option but we haven’t gone back for a return visit. We’re going to need a new mattress in the near future and starting to look around.

Worst mattresses ever made. Whoever successfully thought to sell people an air mattress for a crazy amount of money is a genius though. Those who buy are suckers.

We had one. A queen where you could set the # on each side. We loved it when we first got it. But after about 6-7 years we noticed that the sides were starting to 'poof' out. So...called customer service due to the warranty. Warranty turned out to be about like one on a battery. Asked me to take measurements (can't remember exactly now, but it was something like measuring the width, the height, divide by whatever, etc) When I got done doing all that and got back to them was told that indeed it was under warranty, but since the outcome of the measurements was so and so, it would not be a full warranty and therefore they would replace the bladder for X dollars. Pretty high amount as I recall. So....it was not a full warranty. So, we put up with for another couple years and decided to buy a new mattress. The old fashioned type.
No way I would buy another one. When you buy a product at that price you expect it to last.
And, for some who may wonder, are you so fat that you ruined it, etc....no. Neither me or the wife are terrible overweight. Need to lose a few pounds (like most people)...but not fat/obese.

My wife and I both love ours. Never noticed it losing air. Ours is a generic version I guess no pump kicking on unless we make it kick on. Best bed we have ever had for comfort. I not sure how long we have had it, at least 15 years though!
