I know we saw True Detective but did you see Ballers? Looks like Entourage with sports.

It's like Entourage but with actual men and not boys. I never got into that show. All the characters were annoying and sucked at acting. And while not all Entourage fans are date-rapists, all date-rapists are Entourage fans. A distant cousin to that guy wearing a Tapout t-shirt and shorts.

The only thing redeemable about that show was Jeremy Piven basically playing himself.

Ballers had a great start. You could argue it got more done in a half hour than TD2 got done in an hour. The Rock has some new clients lined up as he pulled up his big-boy undies in his new career. Ricky is now on the Dolphins. Kind of like The League, there's a lot of avenues this show can travel down. You can get almost any NFL cameo you want. There are dozens of NFL subjects you can tackle. This show has a treasure trove of ideas it can tap into, while still appealing to the comedic and TnA side that was Entourage.

I loved Ballers last night and thought Dwayne Johnson killed it. Wish it was longer and love that they use actual NFL team names

Agree with LineSki about the Entourage cast. I was about 20 when the show started and loved it but as I got older, I realized that these guys were just obnoxious douchebags and bailed on the show after season 4. I couldn't finish the series. There's only so much you can watch d-bags scam on chicks and buy things before you realize how awful it is.

Loved it. Agree with it being longer. I didn't want it to end.

The characters/NFL players on the show are an amazing portrayal of the type of idiots that make it to the pros. That Ricky Jarrett guy and the Vernon guy were the typical stereotype of the guys incapable of making good decisions, surrounded by leeches, and going broke in no time.

The scene when the dude was with his "side piece" and something happened(don't want to spoil anything) was hillarious to me.

I already have a love/hate relationship with this show. Man, I hate Reggie and pretty much every character except Dwayne Johnson's Spencer character.

Missed last episode. Reggie was the jackass "friend" who was also managing that players money, right? Denzel's kid is a pretty solid actor..

Rob Corddry is going to be the Jeremy Piven of this show. I think the show goes with him.

Yeah, that's Reggie. Who is Denzel's son?

Is Rob Corddry the Rocks boss? He's hilarious if so.

Denzel's son is the WR (sorry, I need to catch up on names) who got in the fight at the club and was cut. Look at him and some of his mannerisms... totally clicked after that.

Yep, he's the manager or whatever at the financial firm. The Rock may be the main character and everyone loves him, but the show needs more. You need that comical, bat-**** crazy character that makes you want to tune in week after week. What worry's me is that we've all tuned in to watch The Rock obliterate fools on the big screen, but I don't think he will be doing much of that in this show. So I think Corddry and his character really need to be strong for this show to succeed. And whatever other characters they add, because the other two football players (Car salesman and Denzels son) are kind of throw-away at this point.

I'm sure the show will continue to grow and add to it's lineup. Not worried about that.

I think his name is Ricky? I had no idea. I'll pay attention to that character more now. Thanks for that.

This show is awful. I almost can't believe how bad it is. Not one likable character. No plot whatsoever. Not funny at all. Horrible acting (even from The Rock who actually has talent).

Entourage was a pretty terrible show with bad acting and characters but at least it had a promising start and an "original" character in Ari Gold. The dude comparing Corddry's character to Gold- wow.

You missed the point entirely. I never said he was as good, but he needs to be that character because no one else can be. And if you can't see the blatant similarities between the two characters..

"wow".

You realize Wahlberg produced both Entourage and Ballers, right? And that it was no coincidence they used the the same music (Gang Starr - Work) for both show's 2nd episodes? It's pretty clear, for most at least, that Baller's is this decades attempt at an Entourage-like show. They are using a formula that works. Corddry's character may be less of a dick, more of a goof than Gold, but the characters are serving the same purpose.

Not to mention, three damn episodes. Ari Gold wasn't made in 1/4th of a season.

Oh, so Ballers is a Entourage rip-off? Hadn't noticed.[eyeroll]

Ari Gold's character was great right off the bat.

Look- I hate defending Entourage because it was pretty awful in its own right but this show has zero redeeming qualities thus far. Pretty disappointing. Maybe it will find its groove and become halfway decent at some point but I doubt it.

I wouldn't say that I had "high" hopes for Ballers, but it's been pretty bad so far. I actually sort of like the Rock as an actor and I thought this show could at least be decent, but nope.

Like wcc said, no real plot and the characters all kind of suck. The plot is the biggest letdown for me, I thought the Rock as an agent/manager could actually be somewhat interesting.

The biggest thing for TV shows is finding characters you root for, who you want to see succeed- whether they're actually good people or not (for instance, Tony Soprano, Walter White are two bad guys who were such great characters, you rooted for them nonetheless).

Entourage suffered from this as, really, Vince, E, Turtle and Drama kind of sucked. You did have Ari, who was awesome.

Ballers- who do I root for here? Corddry's weaselly character? The Rock's wooden character who's rich enough to wear ridiculous suits and drive awesome cars, but we're supposed to want to see him succeed? Why? And ALL of the football players so far are nothing but dumb pieces of ish. Why should I care that Ricky makes it? The guy is a moron and an a-hole. The big defensive lineman is even worse- a really stupid human being.

I'm not saying it's groundbreaking.. but here is a plot, developing the business, signing more big names. There ARE wholesome characters, Charles and Spencer. There are sidestories, Reggie is about to get The People's Elbow, Charles is contemplating a career back with the NFL. Ricky (for as much of a hothead as he may be) figuring it all out and dealing with Alonzo. Again, are they award worthy? Certainly not. But don't act like this show has zero to offer.

Ari may have been hilarious and some great one-liners, that also became famous. but was he a guy you wanted to root for?

Some are a little too critical for a show that so far is shorter than most movies.
