Apparently, part of the deal with Campbell is that Terry Smith stays on-board in a leadership position.

It was his decision to accept the terms but allegedly two guys turned us down because they weren't willing to let Kraft dictate who would be on their staff.

I do not like it, think there is risk. Some of the remaining players might be Terry Smith guys instead of Penn State guys and still think he should be the HC since he is still around.
Ya I thought there was no way you could bring him back.

There’s some speculation that Campbell’s DC may retire and he may promote his longtime secondary coach to DC. Terry could fill a role as DB coach and he is rumored to be named assistant HC. Terry can help Campbell with recruiting as well. I think, as long as Terry is happy with the situation, the players will be happy with it.

I wonder if Terry would be considered for d coordinator?

After seeing the kind of guy Terry Smith is, I cannot see how someone could “not like” this. I think the upside of keeping this man in the Blue and White — where he belongs — far outweighs any imagined element of risk.

I’m quite certain you are correct in that some (if not all) of the remaining players are Terry Smith guys. If Terry were not retained in some capacity though, I doubt any of them would even BE “remaining” players.

Maybe? I have read that he will officially be the assistant HC. What exactly his role will be remains to be seen. As long as Terry is happy and embraces the role, it’s a win for everyone.

Uhhh…I think TS had to want to stay. It was basically his decision or he could/would have pursued other opportunities.

Really nothing to do with Smith but rather players that stay because of Smith, yet have a burr up their *** that Smith is not HC.

And if the rumor is true that player leadership do not want to play in a bowl game and let that be known to administrators, IMO that is on Smith. Again, if true, that crap should have been nipped in the bud and never left Lasch.

I’m not sure some of the players have the maturity to handle Smith not being HC. Hopefully, new staff and Smith himself will make sure all the players are mentally on-board.

It’s possible a lot of the Smith for head coach sentiment is coming from the seniors and they’ll be gone anyway. I can’t imagine the young guys are all that attached to him.

You don’t know that. You don’t know whether Kraft was stipulating that, that coaches turned it down because of the stipulation, or if this was Campbell’s idea.

Having said that, I agree that this is only a good situation if it was fully Campbell’s decision. I doubt it because it’s not like Campbell had time to interview and vet him. I really hope Kraft wasn’t out there like “We’ll hire you, but you have to keep Terry.” That creates unnecessary barriers in hiring a new coach and possibly team chemistry problems moving forward. If it is fully Campbell’s decision, it makes it easier because it shows Terry is back due to merit and it’s a great way to model for Terry’s guys the selflessness it will take to form a new team. We just simply don’t know at this point.

"Sources" say Campbell has a strict "No After-Market Buttons and No Paper Signs" policy for his staff and players ... we'll have to see if the JoeBots attack based on this revelation.

If they feel that strong about Terry, then he needs to set them straight. Since Terry is sticking around, he must not feel too slighted in not getting the HC spot.

Terry needs to say something along the lines of... I am not going anywhere and ill be here for you guys. But that man is now your head coach and will be treated as such.

I 100% know that he told a specific coach that keeping Smith was a requirement which lead to him not being our next coach.
Campbell agree to the stipulation--hopefully that works out for him. We'll see how it's handled.
I don't think he's back due to merit--I think he's back to appease certain people.
But you're right--time will answer all the questions

There is risk. We hall see how it goes and if Terry can go back to his old role. For the sake of team unity he must.

I don't think so. I think ISU's DB coach is going tobgt th gig because it appears the longtime ISU DC is probably retiring. EDIT: Guess I was wrong about this per latest update.

Seeing Terry's actions the past few weeks, there is no way in Hail that he would allow that attitude to proliferate with the players and what is good for Penn State. His leadership has given me a rebirth, that there is good in this world, God bless Terry and Joe PA.

Is Heacock coming as the DC or another role? 65 years-old, has stated Iowa State was his last stop, and was rumored to be retiring. Don't know much about the 3-3-5. How different is it from a 4-2-5? I would guess that one of the LB would be a OLB/DE hybrid. Interesting to see how it plays out.
