Ryan Young deserves his own thread for how he played last night. Finishes +8 in a game we lost by 9, and with 17 points, it's the 2nd-most in a B1G game in the KenPom era by a freshman big as far as I can tell, only behind The Pardon Game when he took ownership of the state of Nebraska. Not only that, but he outscored future NBA player Smith 15-13 when both were on the court (of Smith's 22 points, 7 came with Jones at C and 2 with Nance at C in the 1st half).

Additionally, props to Ryan Greer, who gave the team 6 quality minutes in the 1st half going +8 to help get the team back in the game after they dug an 11-point hole early.

Raise your hand if Young is the kind of player you predicted in September he would be.

Me either.

He's been a nice player for his first year. He's not the perfect B10 center, but he's workable. I hope he continues to improve.

He showed yesterday he is crafty enough to go one on one with the best of B1G bigs. So, when he develops a good inside out pass, which he struggles with, we can go to him consistently to get the defense off balance.

Wait, that's old school basketball. We'll never do that. Carry on.

PS - Big fan of Young. He will be scary as a vet with all the tricks. For example, he will learn how to draw more fouls with his fakes.

Ya he is the craftiest frosh Center I’ve seen at NU and this in a league full of star big men. He can go one on one against anyone even with very limited athleticism. He’s like a squatter version of Esch.

Would not be surprised if he had film of every game Kevin McHale ever played.

I've said I think he can be the same kind of player as Ethan Happ by the time he's finished. Great footwork and a great touch from inside the key.

I thought this was going to be a thread about GBS and NU legend Jeff Ryan.

Not September but when the preseason started, I felt he could be pretty solid

You are absolutely on the money here. I definitely also thought of McHale as I watched the game & some of Ryan's moves. There was a McHale training tape--remember Beta tapes!--that I used in coaching travel bb that taught some of the exact moves Ryan made. If he can develop into anything like the player McHale was, and with good 3 point shooting from Kopp, Berry and others to prevent defenses collapsing down, we could really have something.
