It seems that in all the excitement about Loyola's tourney bid, people have forgotten all about Northwestern's bid last year. I've heard people on sports radio say how nice it is to finally have a team from the state of Illinois in the tournament. And if someone actually corrects them and mentions Northwestern, the reply is either "Oh yeah, forgot about them", or "It's Northwestern. Nobody cares about them".

I'm also seeing social media posts from the city's pro teams in support of Loyola, which I don't recall seeing for us last year, unless I'm mistaken. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for Loyola and I hope they do well, but I'm a little miffed that people have such short memories.

It’s more a product of the combination of three things:

1) The increasingly short attention spans and short memories of today’s society.
2) People are more “what have you done for me today?” than ever.
3) People of today (in this example, Northwestern fans) being over sensitive to feeling slighted in pretty much every imaginable way.

We were arguably the biggest national story in college basketball last year, and got A TON of coverage. Story after story. Article after article. As an NU fan, it was amazing, and there was so much coverage that I think some non-NU fans probably got a little sick of it. Now it’s less than a year later and people think we are forgotten and no one cares? Come on man. It’s just Loyola’s turn, and they have one hell of a story of their own.

Also contributing to the Loyola hype is the fact that both the Bulls and Hawks are OUT of playoff contention. Loyola is a nice story and they do it with real student-athletes. The only contention I've had is with David Haugh's ridiculous assertion that they are poised to dominate the Chicago college basketball scene. Not when your biggest games are against Illinois State and Bradley. They can carve themselves a nice niche, but NO. When they hosted Stadium doubleheaders in the 50s and 60s, that actually put them on more of a "big game" footing which is what you need to attract attention in the Chicago market.

Yeah, I'm in this boat as well. I'm happy for Loyola and have no complaints about last year's coverage or this year's on this matter.

I wonder if Loyola being in the city limits and Northwestern being in the suburbs (though a near suburb at least) makes a difference in perception. They're lunch bucket working class city folks, while NU is the hoity toity elite suburban rich kids. I think that might be a more general perception of the two schools.

National level, yes. But we are generally a second level local story, even last year. Last year we were right after the CUBS and they were well into training camp hype talking about the potential repeat (not)

Loyola certainly isn't getting more coverage than the Cubs either.

Not to slight Loyola, but they wouldnt have made the dance this year if they played in the big ten. Your going to tell me they are much better than Penn st and Nebraska? Until they win a game against a worthy opponent, which isnt a fluke (at Florida) they are just another losing Illinois college bball program. Now that they are on the map, if you want to go there, no one in big conferences will want to play them and risk a “bad loss.” On the otherhand, there is no reason NU and Loyola shouldnt play every year. If you want people interested in college basketball in Chicago the teams have to play each other on a annual basis.

Not saying there wasn't a lot more than we usually get. But even so, in Chicago, NU's success last year was more of a second level story with Blackhawks still in it, CUBS success in 2016 and the push to repeat. Even who the Bears were going to draft. Loyola up against none of that. Also have an NCAA title in past

Your probably right about how they would handle the Big Ten but how about a W vs. Miami? Think they were a worthy opponent?

Did you watch the game? Did you listen? Miami’s top 2 players are out, they limped into the tournament, and if you have ever seen good basketball, neither team looked good. You got to be kidding me, you throw the ball down low or drive to hole everytime vs Loyola and its game over for them. They have no big man. Obviously, no one in the Valley has one either. Congratulations to Loyola on surviving and advancing, but facts are facts.

Glad to see your enjoying the Loyola experience, even if it's against an under performing Miami squad. Poor guys.
