“Carter Young got a fall tonight, it just wasn’t called,” Clemsen said. “He needs to find a way to not let a ref ignore it. He’s got to pack in so flat and so tight that the guy doesn’t have a choice, that he has to slap the mat.”

interesting. I didn’t think it was ever very close. From the dbknews article

Shayne's shoulders looked like they were at least 8" from the mat, per the televised view.

Yeah…if they start calling pins with shoulders a foot off of the mat, Shayne would have been stuck!

I do believe Clemsen has a history of making inflammatory remarks while getting smashed by PSU. Not sure what this guy's problem is exactly. He clearly lacks sportsmanship though. Pathetic comment from someone who is a head coach of a Div 1 wrestling team. Well, I mean they are working on being Div 1.

The coach has got to say sumpthin positive. That match looked like bonus time on Wall Street after a record year!

that's hysterical. As a ref, I'm constantly talking with coaches. And the things they say, the things they claim -- sometimes it's all I can do to stay professional and respond in a careful, respectful manner.

I'm often hesitant to evaluate another ref's calls. It stems from all the times that people just describe a situation (who knows how accurately), or the number of times they show a still photo as evidence and want an evaluation (I've stated for years how useless still photos are in evaluating wrestling), and ask for what should have been called. And also because I know from experience that the ref is on the mat, and has a view that can't be captured in a video.

That said, when I read Clemson's comments, my immediate thought was that's not how I remembered things, but I'll have to check. I just went back and watched the video of the SVN - Young match. While the camera is not showing the view the ref had, or the view from behind SVN's back, the situation wasn't so close that that type of view is required. Young did not even come close to pinning SVN. Young wasn't too smart in the way he took SVN to his back. He could get swipes from that process, but he had no chance of pinning SVN. SVN's back was exposed, but SVN never was even close to being pinned.

Clemson should focus on coaching his kids up and spend less time painting himself as a whiney dumbasssed d1ck.

I had not read this thread when I made this comment on another thread: "I went back and watched the sequence again. That was one of those occasions when the lowest part of the scapulae was apparently within four inches of the mat. This is from the NCAA Rules Book: "Any part of both shoulders or both scapulae are held within four inches of the mat." Some people forget that the scapulae, and not just the shoulders, are included in determining near fall or pin criteria. In Shayne's case, when the official started calling near fall his scapulae looked to be generally within four inches of the mat, but it was close."
