As Duke fans, what are your perceptions of these players?

How do you feel about these guys who jumped to the NBA early or allegedly ignored K's advice (William Avery)?

1999-William Avery
1999-Corey Maggette
1999- Elton Brand
2004-Luol Deng
2012- Austin Rivers
2014- Jabari Parker
And I guess whoever bounces this year.

Those guys come to mind. I'm just curious how they're viewed by the fan base. Like for Kentucky, unless you got far into the tournament, there's not really much of an emotional connection considering you didn't really accomplish anything and then you bounced and even then, still not much.

Take Nerlens Noel for example. Why would any Kentucky fan give a crap? The guy was on a team who went to the NIT and didn't even play the whole year. I don't know. Not a lot of emotional connection to players who can't stay very long.

I don't have a connection with any of the one and done guys besides the ones on the 2015 team and Austin Rivers. Only Rivers because he provided me with probably my most memorable sports moment ever. If it wasn't for that, I probably wouldn't feel connected to him either. I root for all former Dukies but need at least 3 years to actually feel connected to a player 99% of the time.

Brand was here two years. Maggette was a freak that's k shoulda played more. I liked deng a lot not a fan of the others but if I had to pick one as a likeable one it would be Jabari but just barely above the other two lol

1999-William Avery.....Overrated
1999-Corey Maggette....an atypical Duke player that should have stayed (or never come in the first place)
1999- Elton Brand....Stud
2004-Luol Deng.....Stud, but I think he should have played one more year at Duke
2012- Austin Rivers.....Selfish player, but thank god for his buzzer beater to beat UNCheat
2014- Jabari Parker.....Stud, but not able to put the team on his back in the tournament

Avery stands out as being a bad decision or him getting bad advice - he wasnt ready by any stretch....Magette was a shocker to me when he left. played some and showed some signs of potentially being really good then he leaves. One that i think didnt get enough time and jumped too early - could have been a lot better

William was not ready but his family situation played a big part in his decision to go so I cannot fault him

Avery was selected 14th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1999 NBA Draft after his sophomore year. He averaged 2.7 points per game and 1.4 assists per game in 142 NBA games over three seasons with the Timberwolves. I think he made more money than most on this board (IMHO)n his 3 yr stint. Not the promising career he prob hoped for but I cant argue with him making a few million to help his family. GO DUKE!!

I think there's some substance to the JWill statement. Had Will stayed maybe Duke misses on Williams. Things worked out ok...

I couldn't agree more with Maggette. In the national championship game he had almost like10 points in 10 minutes of play. Why did he only play 10 freakin minutes. No one could stop him in that game except for K. I cant remember but did he even play in the 2nd half? Oh well no need to dwell on it. Ive dwelled on that game more than any. That was the year though that our Dukies went 19-0 through the ACC. Only team in ACC history to go 19-0 I believe. Damn what a team.

I hold no ill will towards any of these players. From all accounts they all came in worked hard and proudly wore the Duke jersey. I get that it's tougher to connect with players that come and go so quickly, but it would be ridiculous for me to judge players who move on to a professional job that pays them millions of dollars. There is no 4 year guarantee when a player commits to Duke that it will be any longer than one year. As long as they give 100% and support the team for the time they are part of the team, I hold no ill will of them when they leave. I know Austin has some negative rumors swirling during his stay but he also carried a pretty weak Duke, by Duke standard, so it is what it is.

They all went to Duke. I'm a fan of all of them. Of those, name one other than A very that "ignored K's advice" (which was clearly baiting). In fact, Deng planned to be here longer but family circumstances led to him leaving after 1 year as I recall.

They all were ballers at Duke and went to go get paid. That's what I think. Families needed help or the plan was to stay one year anyway.

I'm starting to question the motives of the OP a bit.

Why? Someone called it baiting to simply mention about two players that probably ignored the advice and went early? I only mentioned it because I'm a Kentucky fan and we had guys who ignored Calipari's advice and left (Goodwin, Teague maybe more) and I either didn't have a connection to them since they left early or some didn't go far.

No disrespect intended. My brother is a Duke fan, my best friend is a Duke fan (I was in attendance with him when you all won in 2010) and my identity is known as I shared my personal interview with J.J. Redick on here.

I just like talking basketball and getting other views. No baiting, no trolling. Sorry for any confusion.

On a related note, thank God for basketball pre one and done. We were spoiled to see absolute superstars stay two, three or four years all across college basketball.

I miss that because I'm just not a fan of the NBA. It bores me to tears.
