At what point, did it become an embarrassment to have an athletic team named in your honor?

I always considered it to be a compliment to have something named in your honor. Examples. It’s not the pussycats. It’s the Wildcats, Tigers, Lions, Cougars. It’s not some ugly bird like the crows or the vultures. Instead it’s a bird that’s appealing to look at. The Cardinals, the Blue jays. You don’t see any team named the criminals or the hoodlums. And as far as the Washington Redskins go. Why not do a poll among Native Americans & see what pct. Of them are offended by the Washington football team being called the Redskins. And if the majority of them are offended…. OH WAIT A MINUTE. A poll has already been taken on this issue. THE RESULT. 93% of Native Americans ARE NOT offended by the name Redskins. So if they’re not offended by the name Redskins. My question is. Why are you?

Actually it was 1981 -

It wasn't until 1981 that Pekin High School in Chicago, Illinois realised it was inappropriate to nickname its various sports teams the Chinks, a slur used to describe Chinese people.

The school's skating arena was also formerly known as the "Chink Rink," according to the the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, while its mascot was known as "Mr. Bamboo."
I'd swear that was an Onion article, if I didn't know better.

Here is an updated article on the polling which seems to have mixed results:

the term "Redskins" doesn't really honor native american, in fact it's consider a racial slur by some. I'm part native american and I don't really have a problem with it, but that's just me. What this boils down to is a business decision on the part of the team (which is a business) and their sponsors like Niki and Fedex. Personally I don't really care what they do.
