any hiking camping enthusiasts out there? Favorite spots in Kentucky? Any big trips planned? Ultralight enthusiasts?

I’ve got a few trips planned this year. Headed to Utah and Canyonlands early summer for a week. Maybe back to Montana as well. Just bored and wanted to see if anybody else has the bug.

I have the itch pretty bad. My gf and I are hiking the Teton Crest in the middle of August. Got the permits as soon as they went live and now want to tinker with the itenerary. The plan is to take the tram to the top of Rendezvous Mt and start there. But now I want to start at Phillips Pass. Will either need to leave it as is or try our luck with the rangers office the morning before we start. Our permits are for Death Canyon Shelf, South Fork Cascades, & Holly Lake. Would really only need a permit for Marion Lake on night one, but I’m guessing that’ll be damned near impossible to score in mid-August.

Otherwise, we just did an overnighter in the gorge a couple weekends ago... hiked out the Rough Trail to Hanson’s Point in the snow. Kicking around the idea of heading out this coming weekend, but a little concerned that it’ll be muddy as hell. Town Mountain is playing Zanzabar Saturday night... a solid backup plan.

Nice. I did a week in the Beartooth last fall. Your trip looks like a great spot. I love hiking around Kentucky but can’t beat out west for scenery.

Always loved day hiking with my kids. Took them to quite a few places in ky. Now they’re grown and I do overnight canoe trips with friends. Last year did several but the longest was 3 nights on green river through parts of mammoth cave.

I think you'll need to head over to the Louisville or Indiana board if you're looking for back packers....

Glad to see a few folks at least into it here. I lost my love for it for years and have reconnected with it in the last couple years. It’s pretty incredible how much lighter the gear has gotten. I upgraded everything last spring and my tent (tarp), backpack, sleeping pad and bag together all way less than my old Lowe backpack. Which is good cause I ain’t getting any younger and the hiking ain’t getting any easier.

Stopped at the Slade exit on my way to the game last weekend, and it brought back some good memories. I haven’t been hiking/camping in years. Mostly because my last job required constant cell phone service and “things” were almost certain to happen if you snuck out of coverage. With that job behind me, I’m pumped about getting back out off the grid.

A camping trip to the Gorge will happen this spring and a few other day hikes as schedule permits. Really been meaning to check out the channels in southwest VA.

I’m way out of the loop on gear and all mine was lost or given away over the years. Any recs on 2-4 person tents? Something weather proof for all seasons except winter and under 6 lbs.

-i do a lot of day hiking at the gorge. When the weather is nice I try to do a 6-10 mile hike every weekend...it's my "golf". Occasionally I will hit the dix/red/elkhorn in my kayak instead...sometimes a daily double.

-i don't have the time or a good partner for backpacking. I try to do one overnight a season...new deuter bag has only been used as a carry-on to date. Have been planning a wkend with my buddy from Atl to do a 2-3 day trip around Hot Springs, nc...for two years.

I used an MSR Hubba Hubba for years and loved it. Pretty lightweight and not as expensive as the super lightweight tents out there. You could probably find a good used one or prior season tent online for a decent discount. Really wish I hadn’t let the lady talk me in to getting rid of it. Foolish.

-i have an alps mountaineering zephyr 2 that I grabbed on steepandcheap.com years ago. Not ultralight but when split between two packs its nothing. 99 bucks. I used a hammock rig last time out...enjoyed but that can get tedious w/fly and bug net. I can throw my 2 person tent up in 2 minutes...the hammock took 15. I'm sure it will get faster with repetition.

-have a helinox camp chair and an alite mayfly that I *love*. Even at soccer games/concerts is great to carry something slightly larger than a nalgene bottle to sit on.

Welcome.

Cibolo Nature Center. Conveniently sits in Boerne between Fredericksburg and San Antonio. Short hikes of 1/3 to 1/2 miles.

Best is Barton Creek Greenbelt here in Austin.

Have fun. Let me know if you need more info.

I go to a city park all the time with a backpack full of beasts, destroyers and rocs. Only the baskets are safe.
