Bad decisions made in sports

This is not my idea. I heard it on The David Glenn Show which is a local sports talk show in North Carolina. Glenn was asking for callers to tell about the bad decisions made in sports through the years. I thought it would be fun and interesting for us to try. Whatever you think was stupid post it. I think there will be a lot that we all agree on and some that you just feel is stupid.

The one avid Glenn brought up as an example is the one I will use to get us started.
I really disliked this one. It was when they took the dunk out of college basketball. Most of you were too young or wasn't even born when this happened. They took it away because of Lew Alcindor ( Kareem Abdul Jabber ) for those who don't know. Some of you may not even know who Jabbar is. LOL. He was just so dominate they his team mates would throw him the ball and he would just dunk over smaller defenders. He did however develop "The Sky Hook" which became just as potent. What happened is that it also took the dunk away for players like David Thompson of NCSU and Julius Irving ( Dr.J) of UMass. The dunk has become a big part of the game and everyone does it now it seems . Over the years the dunk has become less exciting to me. Some players now come into college with the dunk as their specialty shot. It does have it's place in the game. It's just about a sure shot. It can change the momentum o a game. I watch some recruits high light videos of them dunking the ball all sorts of ways. But give me the guy on offense who not only can dunk the ball but drive to the basket, dish the ball off, hit the mid-range jumper, hit the three and make those free throws. ( Grayson Allen). I'm anxious to see what we come up with. OFC.

Me playing them. It was a disaster, just ask my knees.

I generally believe that the addition of too much video replay is a big mistake. Human error is a part of sports and too much review makes games tough to watch. I love college football, but it is getting slower and slower because the booth can review every play. Does it suck when a play goes against you? Sure (see our football game against Miami), but it's sport and the team that lost should always be doing more to win.

Sky, surely there is no one posting here yet that doesn't remember Jabbar. I mean even if you never saw him you must have heard about him. Remember we are all educated Duke fans here...not like at that other board.

I digress...my bad decision is MJs early retirement. He is the GOAT and there were some other circumstances... Buy what could've been. Talk abt dynasty. And I am a big time MJ and Bulls hater.

The NBA putting in what has now become the "1 and done Rule."
Since it was put into affect into 2006, it has killed college basketball.
I believe the rule should be like baseball, you can go after High School, or you must stay in school, and change it to stay in school 2 years, instead of 3.

I really like this idea and I've been saying the same thing for a while.

But I would ask this - if they just opened the NBA to high-school grads, would we even need a "must stay in school for two years" rule for the kids that don't go right to the NBA? I think by opening the path for people like Wiggins, Simmons, Ingram, etc., to go pro after high school, it's possible that there would be a lot fewer OAD players and the problem might sort itself out in many ways.

I think we would definitely still need a "must stay at least 2 years" rule.
Example-Jahlil would have definitely gone pro right from High School. But Tyus, Justise, and Grayson probably would have all came to school.
And all 3 could have been first rounders after their freshman year. With the rule, they would be in college another year.

Not guarding 3 point shooters late in games...this isn't a shot at any one specific team, just the idea in general over the history of time.

How about when they decided to put face mask on football helmets . Just ruined the game. Now look what it has evolved to. Cages and plexy glass. ;) OFC

Lol along with not guarding the unbounded I'm also gonna add from the same play UK's John Pelphrey literally not even attempting to put his arms up in even the slightest attempts of defense after Laettner caught the ball, but instead basically just turning and watching "The Shot". ☺

I'm going to say, and I can't believe I'm saying it, but ESPN has ruined sports. Initially it was great. More games. Highlights. It was perfect. But then it became agenda driven, media market based, opinionated, and ruining the sanctity of college sports by being the players that constructed conference realignment. There are more things I could add but they have done more bad than good the last 20 years.

I was actually thinking of Pitino not guarding the inbounds pass.

My bad decision kind of goes along with yours. MJ deciding to play baseball after he retired from the NBA that first time. I can understand and respect that he felt the need to step away from basketball after what happened but I think he made a huge mistake trying to play professional baseball. I've always believed that if he hadn't retired from the NBA that first time and the Bulls owner had kept the team in tact then the Bulls would've possibly won every title in the 90's.

Not guarding the inbounder and best shooter on he floor all while the game is tied with 4 seconds left in the National Championship game. If I was a fan of that team I'd kick my own ***!!
