Barker's injury?

Sitting around the lunchroom my co-workers and I were speculating on when Barker was injured. One U of L fan after hearing some say "early in the Florida game" asked "could he have been hurt in the first half of the So. Miss. game said nothing and just tried to play thru the pain/discomfort"? Got me to thinking about how abysmal our offense was in the second half of that game. What say you? P.S. will Drew receive a redshirt? Get an extra year of eligibility for the injury?

I think there is almost no doubt that's actually what happened. But UK will never admit to playing a guy with a bum back for another game and a half.

That could be why there is so much mystery about it. He sure looked great (along with our WRs, that weren't a big part of our game plan until yesterday) the first half to look so bad the second half and ongoing. If he makes a full recovery there could be another QB controversy next year, Johnson certainly looked to be MUCH improved.

Unless he has two medical RSes, likely won't get 6th year. First one was a choice, not medical. Net, either way likely has only two years eligibility left.

I thought that had been confirmed. Wasn't there a report at some point that said he hurt it over the summer and the reinjured it early in the SMU game?

Doubt there will be a QB controversy next year. A token competition maybe, for the press, but with Johnson's beautiful deep ball, emerging intermediate ball, and his ability to use his legs which forces the D to account for all 11 men, I'd say Stevie J. is in a good spot. (Unless he does something dumb like start selling weed at a local high school for beer money)

If Johnson plays like he did Saturday I agree, but did you notice the difference in our offense when we have a passing game to go with our running game?

I can tell you exactly when it happened. The first sack of the UF game. Trust me... I know bum disks in the spine quite well and that landing did it. And watching his passes afterwards...... it was bothering him a little.

Trust Matt Jones on the USM game...... they stole our signs and played us like a fiddle. USM also shut down our run game so unless Kemp and Boom also had bum backs... I wouldnt blame it on a bad back.

I most assuredly agree. One cannot totally survive without the other. I mean, we actually say a complete offensive game Saturday. We looked like the total package. Now defense.....???

I remember seeing a stoops quote that said as much. And that he tried to play through it the next few games but just wasn't able to effectively.

Correct. To play a third year he would need a waiver of the five to play four rule. Not likely under current NCAA guidelines.

Really no need for QB controversy, the amount of snaps Johnson has had and wins solidifies his position for next year. Unless all positions are really earned :cheers2:

Sorry, but I think not one coach is going to start a player at any position that they think isn't the best player to advance their career. The other coaches would notice it as well, and they want to win also. Now the coaches may make mistakes at times, and the competition is very close at times, but saying they would knowingly start anyone but the player they THOUGHT was the best player in the long run is about as foolish as some of the posters on here saying that Hartline must be Brooks son when he first started him. I remember Brooks saying early in that process that Hartline had a better grasp of the offense than any QB he had had at UK, and he had a few good ones, so that made up for some of the fans on here saying he couldn't throw the ball ten yards.

Were you here then?

I was at the game in Gainesville. Had seats 7 rows up at the 45 yard line. On the very first play for Kentucky, Drew got lit up on a big hit, you could hear it plain as day. I think that's where the injury occured.

Low back disk with sciatica involved, probably root injury in summer and continually playing with it until it gave out, not blaming coaches, this injury is tricky.

But when the sciatic nerve did not re-fire/regenerate, they had to operate, he had a dead leg for 2+ months.

Politics???

The election is over.

I will tell you which player ANY coach lies best, it is the one that does the best job. They may even favor the one that is less talented but that tries harder IF it is really close, and that is probably the better choice in the long run IF it is very close.

There are EIGHTY FIVE players on the team working hard to win games, AND the other coaches that probably can see what is going on, and a coach at the most important position on the team is knowingly going to play his "favorite" and throw all of them under the bus.

Sounds asinine to me, and I still think a coaches favorite player is the one that makes him look best and wins games.

There will be no politics. Unless Johnson gets hurt you can bet what Coach Marrow said will come to pass....

Jen Smith‏@jenheraldleader
Vince Marrow on QB Stephen Johnson: "To the Big Blue Nation, this is our guy, and people need to start realizing that."

Good point, and Johnson certainly looked like the man Saturday. But Barker certainly looked the part the first half of the season, now why he fell off so much the second half and forward I have no more knowledge of than anyone else on here. And that was without Snell and before the OL started getting rave reviews.

Johnson made our offense a complete one against UL, badly needed, who knows if Barker can regain the reins after the improvement that Johnson has made, he certainly has earned his shot from the UL game alone, not to mention the other wins. But we need that offense that we saw at UL, a balanced offense that takes advantage of our VERY GOOD WRs AND our probably even better TE.

Certainly Johnson is the favorite now, AND he just outplayed the consensus Heisman winner in this game, and has earned the right to start off number one, but the position still has to be earned. And it may be no contest, regardless, I think we will have a very good QB next year no matter who EARNS the job.

Regardless of who plays QB, and Hoak could surprise, it will be earned, the only fair thing for the whole team.

Is it common for people to play football after having disks fused together? Doesn't seem like something a doctor would approve but I really don't know.

Johnson is the man in 2017. Barker will get his chance, but it's going to be very difficult to unseat Johnson. How good is Hoak?

Yeah playing SEC football is probably not an activity his surgeon would recommend.
