The only thing that'll stop a bad guy with a baseball bat, is a good guy with a baseball bat.

Years ago one of the liberal states (can't remember which one) tried to enact a law requiring a motorist to have a baseball or softball in the car if he also carried a baseball/softball bat. If not, it could have been perceived a as a motorist carrying a deadly weapon. This was years ago and needless to say it didn't pass.

Sounds like a law Illinois passed a few years ago. Basically, it says that anyone carrying a box-cutter in their car must also have a cardboard box in either the front or back seat, i.e. the box cannot be kept in the trunk.

Dumb, I know -- but hey... it's Illinois.

Sounds pretty similar. Stupidity knows no bounds sometimes.

The irony of this is that statistically, the baseball bat is used in assaults far more than other weapons.

Are we talking assaults that don't include shootings, as in punching, kicking, brass knucks, lead pipes, beer bottles, shovels, hammers, knives, etc.?

If so, I could see the baseball bat being the blunt instrument of choice. (I find the tire iron to be excellent). The bat is a solid weapon, doesn't leave much ballistic evidence, allows its user to establish some space between them and their assailant/victim (depending on situations). There's aluminum for those who want a lighter instrument with a harder surface or wooden for assailants who enjoy delivering a nostalgic beating without that annoying "ping" sound.

A little OT, but I used a machete for the first time to clear some brush... that would be some kind of weapon.

At one time the baseball bat was the preferred weapon of choice; it was followed by knives, bottles and handguns. So yes, it did include all assaults with varied weapons.

I used one to help my dad and uncle clear a bunch of brush on my uncle's farm as a 10-year-old. Felt like a badass ninja with that thing. I fought off dozens of brier bush enemies. That's probably illegal now or something stupid like that.

What's the best bat to keep around for self defense?
One that won't break, as in metal. I have an old 38 ounce Tennessee Thumper that I've had for about 30+ years in my bedroom just for that reason. It's just as solid today as it was when I bought it. Today's metal bats are lightweight because everyone wants additional bat speed but the one I have is like a metal pipe.

Does it do a good job cracking skulls open?

I think it would crack almost anything open. This is one of those old, throwback bats from the '80's which were made differently. This thing is as solid as a lead pipe.

Sounds like I need to get one of those. There are heads out there that need to be busted.

For that particular model, which is over 30 years old, you may be able to find one at an estate sale. No kidding; this thing is an absolute club.
