Current status:
President retiring. AD has left the building. CCC has posted consecutive seasons with terrible losing streaks. He brought us to NCAA and advanced a round, should have advanced a second time.
He has celebrated great recruiting victories, like never seen before. He has endured either failure to develop or poor talent identification of grand proportions.
He has shown the ability to connect with players yet has also seen significant departures. Though irrelevant, one or two that would have arguably contributed. And there has been some ugly revealed too.
Most importantly, CCC has not seemingly been a good strategic coach, not a good in game coach and not a quickly adaptive coach.
CCC seems like a great guy. Good pedigree and NBA connections. But it is not resulting in any notable gains.
The roster is full of potential. More highly rated players than ever experienced. But either the staff fails to develop or fails to identify the falsely high rated players.
Current stock would suggest playing fluid two guards with two 3 and Ds and a true big. Lots of single talent players, but real need to develop deficiency attributes - defense, movement, transition technique.
The future:
My opinion is just that. I see departures again this year. And some that could have been... I think we will see a couple that will have better careers elsewhere.
If I was in charge -
Presidential flux is a bit of problem. Question is whether an AD or temp AD comes to fruition. I hope an AD. This administration has been so pro sports... But if I interview, I want to know what I can do especially with a new president coming.
Assuming I get free reign, I realize Fitz is already here. To endear me to a new president, I need to make a mark. So goodbye ccc.
If I interview for the HC position, I study NU history. If it was me, I would reach out to every former coach that will take my call. Result: admissions.
If I am in demand and talking to an AD with current outgoing president, my starting point is admissions. We will get to money but I won’t come here to kill my career. And if I am new AD and I am outgoing president, I consent to some sort of relaxation. As new AD, this would have been an absolute demand to start - need to impress. Both AD and HC need the ability to impress.
So equipped with some latitude, NU hires an upcoming coach - there are plenty and an admissions concessions would be huge.
New coach: defense is starting point (good recruiter too). I let everyone know it’s open competition - no seniority. Folks leave. Program stumbles. But admissions change makes a difference - no change in character (NU character and academia expectations remain - we give kids a chance with some extra help - which we already do), just ability for some judgement calls with any future judgement calls tied to the results of former decisions.
I am a believer that if a coach guys to bat, and the kid proves the coach right, you give more rope. You watch carefully. And if the kids fail or the coach cheats, you move on. But there is so much maturity not reflected in high school transcripts. Admissions can’t get to know every applicant, coaches can.
It’s a pipe dream. But I see no reason NU can’t exceed Duke with the Chicago market right there and the academic offerings. (Btw - Duke was not always good and has had down times...who has then this year
)
I see staying:
Kopp, Young, Gaines (if offered), Greer, Audidge
Most likely to leave:
Buie, Nance, Nicholson, Beran
