Backyard BBQ Pit - it's on Hwy 55 not close to campus. A hole-in-the-wall kind of place but definitely my favorite in town.

That's actually the only BBQ place I've had in NC. But if it's the best, no need to go somewhere else. Thanks.
There are plenty of good BBQ places in NC, but for my money Wilber's in Goldsboro is the best. It's a long ways from Durham, but if you are a BBQ aficionado, then it should be on the bucket list.

And I'm not willing to guarantee it's the best. Actually for me (and I may be crucified for saying this in NC), Kansas City BBQ >> NC BBQ. So my preferences in flavor may not be the same as yours if you really enjoy the vinegar stuff.

Bullock's --> 3330 Quebec Dr, Durham, NC 27705. It has been around since 1952. Was my favorite in Durham.

I have lived most of my life in Texas -- I miss NC barbeque deeply. Sigh.

Allen and Sons. Right off Hwy. 86 between Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. OFC

What's the best near you? I remember when we were down there for the state championship we ate BBQ off the interstate near Burlington and it was fantastic

Clyde Coopers BBQ in Raleigh is amazing!!! If you ever get the chance a buddy of mine is a Pit Master and loves in Roxboro. If you ever see Two State BBQ tent go see Lionel Bateman. He's on Facebook but his BBQ by far is the best in NC.

Mustard based > Vinegar

Anyone know a good place in the Triad? Everywhere I've gone in High Point and Winston has been subpar.

Just going to name a few here in eastern NC that I have enjoyed. Best I've had in my opinion is Jack Cobb and Son in Farmville. Love it! B's Barbecue in Greenville, Skylight Inn and Bums in Ayden. Safe to say Pitt County is king of NC when it comes to bbq. Bunn's in Windsor, Wilbur's in Goldsboro and A&E out of Scotland Neck all have good cue. You would be amazed at how BBQ in NC differs once you go west of I95. Only BBQ that I have truly liked west of 95 is Allen & Sons out of Chapel Hill. Mainly because it tastes like eastern NC bbq. Have not eaten at many bbq places west of 95 though.

I have never understood the infatuation with Parkers BBQ. The cue is average, the corn sticks suck and the stew is nasty. Sue me.

Good lord man, why would you make such a comment? I don't really hate duke fans, but I might have to start after that post. ;)

The South Carolina runs deep here my friend. I like vinegar based Q too, but that mustard zing gets me every time.

JD's Smokehouse near Hickory off exit 113 is the best I have eaten. I'm not much on the vinegar based stuff.

The poor OP just wanted to know where the best Q was around Durham. BBQ is about the most subjective food there is in the state of North Carolina. Everyone has a best place in mind where Q is served and I know theres not just one "best" BBQ place in NC because I have eaten at many of them and the worst I've had was actually pretty good.

Hog Heaven and Backyard BBQ is good in Durham.. I like Hog because their sauce is a tad sweet. Sykylight Inn in Ayden is very very good.. Wilbur's in Goldsboro is OK... its a tad spicy.. I do not like Parker's in Greenville, I have heard the one in Wilson is better. I also like McCall's in Goldsboro... Moore's BBQ in New Bern used to be Delicious... They just changed owners however :(

I very seldom eat BBQ out anymore. The best is straight from my smoker. Slow cook a Boston butt for about 12 hours, it don't get much better than that! Ribs are awesome too.

They did the pig pickin' at the rehearsal dinner for my wife's wedding. I had heard that the ownership change was not good for the product.

Love this thread, BTW.

Bullocks was always my favorite.

Also loved me some Biscuit King when it was open.
