He commented about a player in the portal who contacted us and asked for a guaranteed starting spot. Shane told him that’s not how it works here, so that player will be going to another SEC program.

The player revealed his mindset. He did us a favor without meaning to. Let someone else stroke the selfish little snot.
I believe the general assumption is that it was Diggs from ND. If it was...
We DEFINITELY could have used him. And, it's almost a certainty that he would have ended up the starter here. But, like @Forkcock and @KingWard said above, we're better off without him. Maybe our stat line at RB won't be as good as it would with him, but that's a secondary issue. It says a lot about a guy's mindset when he needs the starting guarantee up front. It tells me that player is not confident in his abilities. How's he gonna respond during the season if he's having a rough game and gets replaced? Yep, better off without him even if our stat line won't be as good.
If you are as good as you think you are, you don't need guarantees!
It's hard to forego the acquisition of talent, but sometimes you have to.
And while we're talking about it, I put this in the same category as Beamer refusing to allow a player transferring out to play in our bowl. It was completely the correct action and I don't see how anyone can dispute that.
It was the correct action for the same reason THIS was the correct action.
