Friends and I were talking about this yesterday. I got into this collecting when I was around 10 years old. My cousins from MN were really into it and got me hooked. I had cans from the Iron City commemorative 4 Super Bowls of the Steelers, The Pirates 1979 World Series win, some 1940s Cone tops, and my favorite…. Old Frothingslosh Beer. My dad loved the fact his daughter wanted to collect these cans (he volunteered to drink the beer lol). My mom well she didn’t exactly approve of my new hobby at the time 🤣. Did any of you collect beer cans?

Your post reminded me that I had one of those Steelers Super Bowl cans which had had the top and bottom removed, and it had been unrolled, flattened out, and mounted on a plaque. It said, “If any can, our Steelers can!”

I hadn’t thought of that plaque in many years. Now I’m wondering what the hell happened to it

I still have a storage tote full of them in the garage. I'll have to dig them out sometime and take a look.

I used to collect them as well. I have many you mentioned and used to love getting every size can for a brand. I laugh now at how many 7oz cans were once made. In this day in age where bigger is better. I still have them all. I have been carting them around for the last 40 years. They are currently in my attic. My wife from time to time will ask my wife I don't toss them out. I keep threating to make a man cave and I they will be on display once again. When I was a kid they were all staked on the ledge as you went down the basement steps. Every now and then my Ma would be going down the steps with a clothes basket and bump them and they would all go tumbling down. She threatened to get rid of them several times. I figure if they survived my Ma they can survive my wife. :giggle:

I have a collection I recently rediscovered while cleaning out my parent’s basement. Many of the same ones you mentioned etc. I threw some away but kept a bunch especially the sports related ones including the JoePa 409, Franco’s etc

I still have a full unopened sixpack of Utica Club (purchased1970's) the first beer legally sold after prohibition and a complete unopened 1950's pack of Old Gold Cigarettes. Would never touch any cigarettes but am afraid to drink the UC :)

Summer of 79, my brother and I shared our first beer. I was seven, he was ten and we were cleaning out the basement of our grandparents' neighbor. We found an unopened can of Fuhrmann & Schmidt, pre-pull tab that needed a hole punch can opener. Somehow we finished the entire can without killing anything other than our curiosity about alcohol. Hindsight has revealed that the F&S Brewery had gone out of business in 1975 and 75% of breweries had switched to pull tabs by 1965. Apparently locals referred to F&S at F'n S#!t.

Oh, the memories. Once upon a time in 1962 we had a contact who worked in a local beer distributer, there was a road/ground level fold down casement window just tall and wide enough to slide a case of beer through. On Friday nights there was a cigar box inside that unlocked window that we would place our money in and on Sat nights our case of beer would be sitting on the ledge inside that window. Fortunately, that window faced an alley away from any prying eyes. Drive up get your case of beer place it in the trunk and off we went to the Hop. We were instantly popular at those dances. :)

As someone who grew up outside of Utica, I would say that it's better unopened than opened.

Yes and still have a decent amount of them - in my case my brother drank the full ones - I just asked him to pop the bottoms out and keep the tab on 😆

I still have a full can of Billy beer 🍺

I have a Black Diamond beer coaster .
Had maybe 200 cans, all over 40 years old . I have a sports bar themed entertainment room with memorabilia . No room to display the cans.
My brother in law has a display like BigO. I gave him all mine to add to his collection .

Used to, it was a blast as a kid. Like searching for gold. We still have them somewhere.

We live in an olde house in a small Boro - have a big (unheated and uncooled) attic. (I just make up my own words lol)

But even though it gets too hot 🥵 and too cold 🥶 up there I’ve spent years trying to create a way to get my old trains up and all my old collectible stuff up.

About 14 years ago we had a fire and I lost a lot of old cool stuff…..but I still have some cool old stuff and even though it means nothing to anyone else, it means something to me.

So sometime out of the blue, I just go up there and put some music on, turn the trains on and just go thru my “stuff” - lol!

Thanks for all the replies! Made my day. My hubby and I love going through our old stuff… I have a few old beer cans left, my Charles and Diana royal wedding news clippings, my Go Gos and Journey fan club stuff, his old Sports Illustrateds, baseball card collections. He also has old notebooks filled with baseball players individual stats. Btw when I taught middle school math, I loved using sports stats with my students. Made math real to them.
