Based on a brief discussion w/ Gastineau about Duke's all-around athletic prowess, got me thinking: which five colleges combine the best of both? I'm looking for top five, and I'll give you three: Duke, Stanford, Notre Dame.
Any objections to those, and who would be the other two?

Could make a case for UCLA and Michigan.

Def. agree on Duke, ND, Stanford ... UCLA, Michigan, and UVA are all in consideration for the top 5 as well, imo. All very fine in academics and sports. Can't go wrong there.

Great reply. Hadn't thought of UVA, which is major omission on my part. Wisky anyone?

I didn't realize Georgetown had a football program. Do they have good sports programs? I am not aware of any outside of basketball...which is so so

Unfortunately you have to include Florida. Top 50 academic program but highly successful sports programs makes up for not being top tier academically

Not Top 5, no
Include them where? Top 10? Definitely not top 5.
I'd put them ahead of Georgetown certainly. And USC and UVA and maybe Michigan and UCLA. It's hard to argue with 4 national championships in 10-11 years in just men's football and basketball

Guess I didn't do adequate research on Georgetown. I ran XC/Track in college, and I always remembered them having one of the better running programs in the country. For some reason I thought they were highly competitive in a lot of the non-competitive sports like golf, tennis, cross country, and soccer. They finished 59th in last year's Sears Cup, which is okay, but certainly not worthy of top 10 for academics/sports. I guess I'll put Florida in place of Georgetown for my revised rankings.

I'll throw in an ivy. How about Cornell. Respectable in basketball and football. Have had very good lacrosse and hockey programs.

Same could be said for Yale.

I also think Hopkins is worth mentioning. They only have one varsity sport and they do it very well.

But yes, Georgetown is still very competitive in cross country and soccer for both men and women. I thought they were a well-rounded program that dominated most sports outside of football and baseball.

I think "public Ivies" have the competitive advantage:

UNC
UVA
U Cal Berkley
Michigan
University of Texas

Here is the question #Willcampbell -- do you want the best academics / athletics combo on a school-wide level or where athletes perform the best academically?

University of Texas and Texas A&M have more money than just about anyone. If there is an academic program they want, they just buy it.

If I were looking for the smartest athletes then I would have to go with the Ivys. If I had to go with the smartest players that enjoyed athletic success I would have to go with Duke and Stanford. I've known some Notre Dame football players in my time -- not the brightest crayons in the box.

You are making it more complicated than I intended. Make of it what you wish...it's run its course anyway.
