Who you got? I'll Take Lester "Roadhog" Moran as my first pick. His guitar player "Wichita" was every bit as good as Check Adkins. They set the standard for Live recordings with their groundbreaking Live at the Johnny "Mack" Brown High School Album. The syndicated show on W.E.A.K. radio really launched them. Between sold out gymnasiums and cafeterias along with the sponsorship deal with Ernie's Eggs they were riding high in those days.

I have this album and play it every once in a while for the younger generation. They double over laughing when it gets to the point of talking about Charlie Pride. Too funny

These boys toured with Johnny Cash and I saw them in concert a half a dozen times.

As far as best country singer that is a hard one. Gram Parsons was on his way but drugs got him too young. Hank, Sr had one of the shortest careers but left the biggest impact and was the one who made it mainstream. His Cold Cold Heart has been recorded by many non country singers and reached #1. Look at the impact Johnny Cash had over a 40 year career. George Jones, Waylon, the list is long.

I can't answer this question. Too many greats.

Oooooh, Charlie Pride's "Roll on Mississippi" may be my favorite country sing of all.

Can't pick a "best". depends on the moment and partly the song. John Conlee, Merle Haggard, George (Both), Johnny, just so many...

There are many choices in country, depending on the type of song. Some "greats" can't cover other songs worth a damn because it isn't their style.

Better subject would be your choice for best "all around" country singer. That would eliminate a lot of the old school icons.

Willie and Cash can cover anything and it becomes theirs.
The NIN song hurt is better as a Cash cover.

I have to vote for Possum which brings up another guy that has been mentioned here, Keith Witley! I saw Keith playing at the Holiday Inn North in Lex with JD Crowe! my goodness he could sing and could do a great George Jones impersonation which very few would even attempt. Unfortunately, Keith had a problem with the bottle even then! Saw players/singers like Tony Rice, Rickey Skaggs, Bobby Slone and other greats playing with JD. Also JD was widely acclaimed as the greatest banjo player of his time!

Where the hell did they play, a ballroom? I worked front desk there 94-96? The bar was small so had to be a ballroom setup.

I still hate youth teams, hundreds packed into that Holidome.

my older sister and bl went to the holiday inn north regularly back in the day.

it was just off the i75 newtown pike exit. i passed it many times but never stopped in. i actually took that exit last week on my way to visit family member in the hospital. https://www.kentucky.com/entertainment/music-news-reviews/article240626997.html

Earl paved the way didn't he? I really think JD might have taken things to an even higher level but heck, hard to compare. Two greats!
