Murphy vs Swain County
Is this going to be that game? The game that Murphy’s Coach Gentry tries to break the all time state record? The game is at Swain Right? Wow that would be a game I would drive almost two hours to see....

Hearing good things from the SMC this season. Dominating some non conference teams. Going to be an exciting conference season

I didn't know that. What were the results like for Polk in the SMC?
Polk were middle of the road three of the four years, one bad year in '97. Their overall SMC record was 12-20.

Hendersonville had more success, they were 20-12 overall and won the SMC in '98 and '00.

The league was really tough overall during that time period, very few easy games.

But you got to remember Polks years in the SMC were pre Ollis it's a different program since his arrival.

Pre Ollis all time record 62-79

After Ollis Arrival record 147-74

Ollis made a big difference for Polk different program since he came on board in 02.

This is a very interesting statement. What do you think has been the reasons for decline in games. It does seem like blow outs are way more common now.

I like to hear people’s opinion on some of the older teams. Where these late 90’s team really that good or just average compared to today. I have heard the 99 rville might be one of the very best smc teams that didn’t win a title.

I can tell you from 85-99 those teams were more talented year in and out. You had two pro players go through the smc. That’s unusual for small ball.

That’s true. It just seems like the gap from top conference teams to bottom tier team is wider than it has ever been. Do you think it’s the same across the state in other conferences?

NAFTA.....Manufacturing started leaving taking families and jobs away from the mountains.....

I agree with you, but I also think there are some other factors. Robbinsville lost their furniture factory and are still going strong. Andrews’ results weren’t much different even when they were still making Lee jeans and the hospital was open. Hayesville was pretty good in the 90s and early 2000s but has fallen off even though Clay County didn’t take any huge hits from NAFTA. Participation numbers, teenagers’ mindset, tradition, culture, and some other factors play into it, too, I think.

Too many options. Back in my day we played all sports, very little specialization. The gap between the haves and have nots was not as pronounced between the schools.

Back in the day I remember it being if you wanted to play basketball in the winter, you better be playing a fall sport. Nowadays, it's I'm not playing this sport so I can focus on this sport even if they're great at both.

And who knows how much AAU and these pay to play football teams in places like Charlotte have removed kids from teams because their parents think the kid is special and can use the paid exposure.
