...for a long weekend in the summer- the closer to NKy, the better.

Exes family had a vacation home in Grand Haven, it was a cool little laid back town. Had a few decent bars/breweries and I probably visited 20 different antique store while I was there, definitely not touristy and never really seemed all that crowded while we were there.

If you want close and fun, I hear put-in-bay in northern Ohio is fun.

What is the nature of this trip? Romantic with the lass, or your bachelor party?

Just a weekend away for her birthday in July. For some reason- likely the savvy Pure Michigan commercials- she really wants to check one out of those lake towns. I want somewhere charming not dbag land like Put-In.

Agree with tommy's recs. Not a lake town but the ford museum n Dearborn is a really cool place. Mackinaw is really cool as well. Traverse city is really nice too

In Michigan right now... Traverse City is what every body says. I've hit Holland a bunch and it's fun, but nothing like Traverse apparently.

Traverse City. Great town, great scenery and drives. Great micro-breweries all over the place.

For the unsophisticated it is Mackinac Island. Mackinaw is the city where you catch the boat to the island.

Traverse City, Torch Lake, Suttons Bay, Petoskey and Lake Leelanau are my favorites. Check out Grand Dunes as well, the place is amazing.

I don't believe that the best lake towns are in Michigan. Who conducted the polling?

Uh, better lake state within several hours of NKY? Probably not a better lake state in the country, actually.

Torch Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country.

Black Lake is great. Traverse City and Mackinaw are both great. Black Lake doesn't get really warm until late mid to late June but it is beautiful.

Great thread here. I visited Camp Grayling, MI 36 years ago while assigned to the 101st ABN and we trained the Indiana National Guard. Heard tons of positive feedback about Traverse City and Mackinaw. The area is a bucket list item for me in a few years.
