If I was to move to Lex, which neighborhoods would you recommend for a 300k house? I'd like to stay as close to downtown Lex as possible, but be in a safe neighborhood.

Any recommendations?

I notice Ashland Park and Chevy Chase are pretty much out of that price range.

thanks

Near downtown for around 300k in a nice neighborhood is going to be slim. It's not necessarily impossible but you'd probably have to raise your price or settle for outside the circle.

thanks for recommendations, I've lived in 4 major cities on West Coast and East Coast and I believe Lexington is a hidden gem in some ways. It has some of the most beautiful tree lined streets I've seen and it feels like a "big" college town, not a "small" college town, which gives it just enough vibrancy to remain interesting and not too boring. If I were you, I would fight to keep it small and not let it grow too big because lots of problems come with too much growth. I found there to be more diversity than I expected because of UK, which is a good thing.

Every time I visit Louisville now it feels negative and has too much crime associated with a big city now. I grew up in Louisville and I don't like visiting compared to the past. I would not consider moving back there anymore....

Linebeards are a true species in Louisville. They seem to be everywhere and it gives the city an "ickiness" that I'd like to avoid.

Lexington has more homeless than Louisville, shootouts almost every day, and folks are flooding all the areas outside of Lexington because there is a humongous hole downtown.

Lexington is actually considered as one of
The best small cities to move to and invest in.
One of the top in the USA.

How would you Lexington natives rank the public high schools?
Public
1. Lafayette
2. Henry Clay/Dunbar
3. Lexington Juvenile Delinquents Center
4. Tates Creek
5. Bryan Station

Hopefully Douglass will be closer to 2 than 4, but I'm not holding my breath.

It's remarkable how wide
The delta is between the good and bad high schools.

I have a feeling Douglas will make the difference in Bryan Station and the rest of the schools a little wider.

Not to the extreme of disliking outsiders, but there is this sense that although people are cordial, it's hard for outsiders to make friends--especially in the more established areas of town. Lexington is a tough nut to crack. I say this also as a lifelong resident.

Edit: also in not saying this problem is indigenous to just Lex. You get on city-data.com, you see a lot of the same about Richmond VA--and to some extent--even Louisville.

Meh. You make your own way in regards to that.
Join a clique. J/k.

I'm going by what I hear from out of towners. One dude, successful lawyer in Phx with a hot wife said he was amazed how everyone here was "inward turned"..and this dude has tons of friends in the valley.

Sure, maybe if you're outgoing and friendly (having $$$$ helps) you can make your way in Lex. If you're introverted and shy..not so much.

Check city-data.com, Funk. Everybody agrees.

Cat, You try bribing folks with cocaine? Lex loves some cocaine.

I've yet to find the 'making friends' part of city-data.com

Hardly Montclair, btw

Forums. Just create an account like an outsider and make a post inquiring about any "good white areas of Lex to settle down". I'm sure Firebrook may come up once or twice

Seriously, I've lived in Lexington on two separate occasions and had no problem making single friends while I was single the first time I lived here and married couple friends now that I'm married and live here again.
