Best lineup?

We have talked about the starting five for next year with most everyone saying it’s Clarke, Boston, Sarr(if he plays), and Brooks for sure with one of Mintz or Askew at the Point.

I think that will be the starters most definitely, but will it be our best five (not always the same as the starting five for various reasons)?

I think the most exciting lineup, especially offensively, might be four guards and Sarr inside.

F Sarr

Offensively, the spacing would be really good with an extra shooter. This keeps defenses from collapsing on Sarr. It creates a lot of space for drives for Clarke and Boston.

Defensively, the way Cal switches everything, it would be a great lineup since everyone 1-4 can guard quickness, which is what usually seems to get us in the tourney.

The downside would be rebounding.

Gimme the better scorer, big stage experienced PG in Mintz, and the best rim protector on the team.

Bouncy-rangy Brooks and Jackson who can both run will give any opponents 1, maybe 2 post guys who just can’t keep up.

Honorable mention, swap Sarr for Jackson.

I think that will be the starting five if Sarr isn’t eligible.

My concern is no punch inside. Jackson will struggle to score in the post. Jackson will score off putbacks and lobs.

We need Sarr to give us a post presence on offense.

I am not as high on Jackson as the rest of this board. Hope I am underestimating him. 6’10-ish and maybe 200 lbs. concerns me, if he is our main man at the 5.

Yeah, makes sense. I am picking that lineup with Sarr on the team, as a faster-change of pace lineup. If its full time, may get exposed w no beef as you pointed out.

no brooks? That seems crazy to me.

I would say Askew/Mintz, then the obvious 4 which is

Clarke, Boston, Brooks, and Sarr.

This puts another shooter on the floor to space the floor. Brooks hasn’t shown that he can knock down the 3 consistently.

I agree that Mintz , Askew , Boston Clarke and Sarr are our most exciting line up but the starting line up is our best for overall success - Askew Clarke Boston Brooks Sarr.

The only problem with this being your reason is that Brooks is the only one of the perimeter players that has made a 3 in a college game. I know it was just one game, but it was the last game and maybe the light finally came on for Brooks, or maybe he just had enough opportunity, but Brooks really looked good in the last game he played.

I may be wrong on this, but I think Boston, Clarke, Brooks and Sarr (if eligible) will all play 30+ minutes, with the first 3 problably playing closer to 35. But I do think there is a lot of questions concerning the 5th spot. I think the obvious is Askew/Mintz, and I think those combinations will be tried early, but I think there is a real chance that Cal slides Clarke up to the point in an Evans type PG role and starts someone like Allen at the wing, or decides to go super big with inserting Jackson beside Sarr and moving Brooks up to the 3 spot. I fully expect Cal to try something like that at some point regardless, as we all know Cal likes to be big and long. That would be 2015 type length and athleticism.

I could see Cal trying something like you are talking about, especially if one of Mintz and Askew does not emerge as PG.

That’s the kind of length that Cal loves.

That is a classic Cal lineup. Make people try to score over your length and crush your opponent on the glass. The downside is a lack of shooting, which is something Cal will trade for defense and rebounding dominance.

Starting 2 seniors and a sophomore. Lots of D1 experience to go with 2 stud lottery picks.
Askew, Allen, and Jackson will be the main contributors off the bench. This should be a solid 8 man rotation. Which is about what Cal likes to go with.

I can’t see Cal not starting Brooks. Then you have Boston and Clarke. I assume Sarr will be eligible and will start. That obviously leaves one spot that I’m not sure of until we see them on the floor.

Sounds about right for the starters.

Not sure how much PT Allen will see in that ever so crowded backcourt.

Boston and Clarke are likely 30+ minute guys at the 2 and 3.

Mintz and Askew will probably get 50 minutes total at the 1 and 2.

That leaves about 10 minutes at the 3 for Allen and Fletcher.

Also, Brooks might take those minutes if he plays some 3 like he did last season.

But if Allen is as good as a lot of people on here are saying, then he could end up in the rotation. I’m just not sure who he gets his minutes over on the perimeter.

Where do Askew and Mintz get minutes? There are only 40 minutes at the 1. Do they get 20 minutes a piece? Does Mintz get 30 and Askew only 10? Vice versa.

If both are before Allen in the rotation, they will get the minutes over Allen.

I think we are looking at four guards getting most of the minutes at the 1-3 spots: Clarke, Boston, Mintz, and Askew.

Then we are looking at four forwards getting most of the minutes at the 4-5 spots: Brooks, Sarr, Jackson, and Ware.

That’s the 8-man rotation. Then Allen and Fletcher battle for the 9th spot.

Mintz has shown that he shoots around 35% in college. Askew, Clarke, or Boston...none of them have shown anything.

You also lose a lot more by putting in Mintz or Askew over Brooks, who btw does shoot three.

Brooks shot 33.3% in conference play...no tourney. He knows what he needs to do to grow. He plays with aggression. Put in category that you'll see a nice uptick with Brooks.

I think Top 3 will be Boston, Clarke, and Brooks. Two of those should be on the court at all times.

I think we see Mintz start early, but Askew takes over by the end of the season, but only time will tell. Askew has a higher ceiling and is a better shooter. Think he will see a decent amount of minutes at the 2 as well, to spell Boston. We have two very solid options at PG, which is a beautiful thing. May even see Clarke get some opportunities to run the team in a taller lineup or to mix things up.

Just a guess on minutes per game:
PG: Mintz 27 Askew 13
SG: Boston 30 Askew 5 Allen 5
SF: Clarke 30 Allen 7 Brooks 3
PF: Brooks 25 Jackson 10 Ware 5
C: Sarr 30 Jackson 10

Boston, Clarke, Brooks, and Sarr could easily be 30+ minutes per game guys. But there will be instances of foul trouble (always seems to happen to us), and Cal will want to keep guys fresh and get experience for the bench to be ready when called upon.

Mintz is a combo through and through and I believe if/when Askew hits his stride he’ll surprise some here. He’s the perfect PG for Clarke and Brooks and he has the right mentality. As I am high on Jackson and when that team gets running and gunning like Cal wants it’ll be exciting.

I think we will see a lot of deference given to Brooks, because he's returning. (See Harrison and Harrison vs. Ulis and Booker, 2015.)

I think Brooks has a great season as well.

But it is possible that the some combination not containing Brooks might be better collectively.

Not every freshman comes to campus as a finished athletic product. Most need proper nutrition and development, and most improve their skills as they learn the system and get themselves into better condition. Will be as true for Jackson as it was for Nick Richards and Willie Cauley.

The funny thing is in a true ddmo system that lineup would work fine across the board. But Cal simply won't do that here. And with the old school style he demands where our guys have to establish post positions, you guys are right, that's not a lot of beef for play in the SEC or from the Sweet Sixteen on.
