After reading the NU football write up on the Cats I subscribed and this just highlights the value of the Athletic. The writers learn about the teams. Its a joy.

Completely agree. Been a subscriber to The Athletic since June and it’s fantastic. For those that are only into Northwestern sports, it’s probably not worth your money as they unfortunately don’t put out much NU content (as you would expect, we just don’t have a big enough fan base to warrant a dedicated writer). But if you are a big sports fan, especially professional sports, it’s easily worth the subscription. Pieces like the NU basketball one linked are more the norm than not. For example, in season, every Chicago sports team will have 1-3 articles written about them per day, and most of them have great content that is in depth and engaging.

I agree with everything you've said, Jonny. The general college basketball coverage is as good, if not better, than anything out there.

Locally it's junk. The local end of the Athletic covers Dan McNeill better than it covers any of the college basketball programs.

I've traded emails with Jon Greenberg, the Athletic's local editor, about NU and local college coverage. I dont believe for a second there's not enough interest to have one guy dedicated to all the local college football and basketball programs - especially for a general upstart which is what the local version of the Athletic is.

Pre-season, mid-season and end-of-the-year for NU, DePaul, Loyola, Illinois with some mid-major mixed in? Put that on top of some local college football coverage. There's PLENTY for one writer.

His argument was it doesnt receive the hits, but I'd really like to see the comparison to the hits on another 20-40 win Bulls season. And they often have two writers.

There's also a sports journalistic standard that goes beyond marketing where the bar is falling lower and lower.

Agreed that their general coverage of college basketball (and football) is fantastic. And the handful of programs they have dedicated writers for is great too. I understand your point about the local coverage for college sports being weak. I also understand their stance that they just don't get enough hits to warrant it, but I think there is probably a middle ground.

Their biggest issue has been that they have obviously invested heavily in getting high quality sports journalists that have a lot of experience and great reputations. They have the strongest sports journalist staff of any outlet in the category- blows ESPN out of the water. However, since they are a subscription service, they rely on those subscriptions to pay the bills and I don't think they have reached that break even point yet. Last I read they had eclipsed 500k subscribers and were projecting to get to 1M within a year. They need to keep increasing those numbers to make this viable while they also tinker with their paywall/limited free article model.

I really hope they have success and continue to grow because they provide a great product. I will always pay to support a service that invests in a superior product over something that is mediocre but free. Unfortunately, and I'm not saying this in a judgmental way, but I think people like you and I that will pay for superior content over a free product is going the way of the dinosaur. Makes it hard for these companies that are investing in higher quality content to stay afloat.

Does former NU basketball player Doyle write for the Athletic?? I think I heard that he does?? I thought he was great on BTN basketball coverage. Too bad Gill tried to beat him up for telling the truth.

.

If a sports writer in Chicagoland has ever tweeted about NU, Jon Greenberg has probably replied to it making fun of the program or the writer.
