Best easy to find, carried most places type of beer cheese is the Kentucky Hot. There are no equals in the mass produced and packaged beer cheese world. Had a lot of fancy "homemade" types that cost more and sucked more. Go Kentucky or go f yourself.

If you live in Lexington, go to the Save A Lot on Southland Dr. The beer cheese they make in the deli has no peer.
I'm convinced that the Save a Lot on Southland deli is going to become the next hipster hangout spot. Such a strange place to have good stuff.

I grew up in central Kentucky and love the stuff. It's a unique Kentucky product and hard to find out-of-state. I live in Atlanta now, and some Kroger's carry a brand called "Big Russ beer cheese" in their deli specialty cheese section . Good for a quick fix but not up to the good stuff you get in KY.

When I'm in Lexington I go to the Liquor Barn (Beaumont), and they have a huge selection of local brands. Good to try several! They carry the "original" beer cheese by "Allman's", which is worth a taste.

I believe both "Allman's" and "Hall's Snappy beer cheese" both claim to be the "original beer cheese". I think they are both restaurants in Boonesboro on the river? At one time "Hall's snappy cheese" had wide distribution and was sold by many stores -- but it wasn't actually MADE by Hall's (instead some big Louisville company). But Hall's on the River does still make their own and sells it at select stores in Kentucky or on-line.

Good old pictures here of Allman's and Hall's on the River:

I like most of the local Kentucky brands as long as they aren't too hot or runny....

I always got Kentucky Hot but I went and bought some from Save A Lot on Southland based on this thread and it may be my new favorite.

What else is good there? I thought about getting some hot dog chili sauce but I was afraid it was Cincy style.

My regular grocery store doesn't carry beer cheese. So made my own this afternoon. So easy, so inexpensive and...so good. Thanks to all for the suggestion.

sharp cheddar cheese (1 lb), beer (1 bottle), cream cheese (1 small package), onion juice (1 Tbs), Worcestershire sauce (1 tsp), garlic (1/2 tsp), cayenne (to taste) Heat and blend and cool.

It's hard to make it cheaper than you can buy it.

My father made it with a similar recipe. The beer he used was "flat" -- opened a day before.
