I admit, I really don’t like the NBA. That said, I’m curious why Jah is a bench guy/DNP in the League? Injuries? Due to the traditional 5 being pushed out?

Probably a combination of things...

#1 As you said, the traditional post-up big man is not as popular now as in the past...The stretch-4 playing center seems to be the way the game is evolving.

#2 Jah has always been a bit of a liability on defense; he lacks elite athleticism and that hurts when the game is played at a high pace in a man-to-man defensive scheme.

He’ll be in the NBA for a long time, but I’m not sure he’s ever anything more than a substitute. There’s nothing wrong with that, either. He’s just one of those traditional big man who has a tough time finding a niche right now.

I would trade jobs and salaries with him!!
Remember when Gary Kubiac was asked if he wanted Elway to sit out so he could play more. His response was hell no because people would realize he was not any good and he could not make 200 k per year in any other profession

Jah is about a decade and a half too late for the NBA. Jah imo has always been a bigger more talented Al Jefferson. Al Jefferson dominated early with the Jazz and was a key player to Charlotte befoee the small ball era took over. Quickly after it did Al was out of the leaque or resorted to DNPS AND low miniutes.

For Jah to find a time now, he needs a consistent 15foot and out jumper. His footspeed not going to magically increase so he will always be a liability on D. But if he can expand his Offensive game, and take a Brook Lopez approach to his training ( where Lopez developed a reliable 3 and doesnt hesistate to take it in game) then I can see Jah lasting in the leaque.

Basically what everybody has said.. there’s not much use for a traditional Center in the league right now unless they are hitting 3’s or blocking every shot that comes in the paint.

Sadly but I think Carey will have the same problem in the league. For as good a year as he's having, his draft position is still mostly mid to late first round.

This. If Carey (the most dominant freshman big-man in the country) was entering the draft in 2015, he's a top 3 pick just like Jah. If Jah was entering the draft this year, he would not be a lottery pick.

The NBA, mainly due to advanced stats and analytics, made a massive change to the way the game is played over the last 5 or so years. The numbers say that dumping it down low and playing out of the post is inefficient professional basketball. And playing through the post was Jah's calling card.

Jah would possibly be a perennial all-star if this was 1997 when the game was played at a snail's pace, unfortunately it isn't. At least his rookie contract scale was based on being the #3 pick so he still got around 25 million dollars on his rookie deal alone.

I think unfortunately you guys are ignoring Jah's lack of effort at the defensive end that we have seen for a number of years. I am impressed with Carey's effort, including against Notre Dame when he was really shuffling his feet out on the perimeter. I think Carey will have more of a career arc like Wendell Carter which seems to be quite good.

Carey will face alot of the same issues. But the thing that Carey has that Jah never did was a respectable 3 point shot. You leave Carey open he will not only take the 3 but he expects to make the 3 as well.

When he plays significant minutes he puts up 20 plus and 10 boards plus. It's the NBA, not Jah. Hes still a stud, but the league cant figure it out.

I think there’s a big man center coming up that will change the game back to have traditional back to the basket centers. He will be so dominant that you won’t have a choice but to run your offense through him. The time is coming

You are right, one just got to the league, that guy is Zion.

Zion is the perfect small-ball 5 in today's game. The offense will be run through Zion, he will dominate in the post, and he can also play modern basketball stretching his game out to the 3 point line and attacking from there.

No I mean a legit tall big man. Like another Shaq type and he's going to change the game. Zion is just...idk. he's different. But at his size and athleticism he's really rare

I get what you're saying, I just don't see it happening with a legit 7 foot type guy until the rules change. You are currently allowed to bang people down low but you can't touch someone out on the perimeter. It emphasizes spacing and perimeter play.

When Shaq played you were allowed to be physical out anywhere on the court, so it made a lot more sense to play through the post.

I do wish the big-man came back, I love today's NBA, however I think the 3-pointer has essentially gone too far and I wish the rules changed a bit to allow for bigs to again be dominant guys.

If anything... Zion hurts Jahs chances and the traditional big man even more. Zion is the perfect small ball 5. A 6 7 unstopable force that can move his feet, guard multiple positions... Zion is the ace card for today's NBA

A main thing is if he would be able to defend in space. With the NBA valuing positionless basketball, the most valuable bigs in the league are the guys that can defend on the perimeter and defend the rim without being a liability.

I know for a fact that defending ball screen, and more specifically screen and roll, has been difficult for him to pic, up. And in the NBA, whether you can defend ball screens is beyond important.

Can't get in the game unless you hoist threes even if you are 25% shooter. Rumor some teams may ban two pointers! ;)

Such a copy cat league. Each team attempting to run Golden State offense but it don't work without shooters like Steph & Klay.

I don’t agree it’s just or mostly the traditional big man issue.

As noted by a couple, it’s his defensive liabilities. Pure and simple. He is slow-footed and can’t hang with guys defensively. If he were a shot blocker and good defender he would be on the court. Teams still play big men who are not outside shooters.

I hate this new NBA. You don’t even have to be a basketball player to make the NBA now. They just want athletes pretty much. Back in the day they used to go at the top defenders. Now people like Kawhi hardly get to guard the ball because they set a million picks to get the mismatch they want. Houston is everything that’s wrong with the NBA now. I hate watching them.

Some people think the NBA is truly a collection of the finest 450 basketball players on planet earth. Incorrect. There are many factors including those off the court that go into not just who is included on a roster but also who steps foot on the court and for how long. Imagine if Okafor had Embiid's flamboyant personality.

Realistically 1/3 of the NBA is tanking so many teams rather focus on projects and expiring contracts.
