Not sure on the type but Fran said during call in show he'd be out a while.

bench is getting to be quite thin.

Time to see what Mulvey, Dix, and company can bring. Kingsbury probably going to be worked into spot minutes.

Agree. Kingsbury was a prolific high school scorer and has shown he can knock some shots down. I can't believe after essentially two years in the program that Mulvey can be so bad that he cannot get on the floor when we literally have no other options. Time to see what these guys can do including Laketa or Eldridge in spot duty if necessary. Kris and Rebraca cannot be expected to log such heavy minutes for the entire season.

At some point, maybe right now, this season is about next season. The challenge is that Fran doesn't have many options left outside of Mulvey and Kingsbury. The other reserves are guards and we are OK there for depth. If Mulvey can't get PT under these circumstances he won't ever and as much as I would love to see Josh contribute, I don't think he is a P5 player.

In an interview last June, Mulvey said this:

“In the past year, I wasn’t getting in the gym enough. I was just coming to practice and only staying after a little bit, if any at all. And then the only time I would get in the gym by myself was to go shoot and it wasn’t with a coach to get better at skills, and it wasn’t like do better at lifting. It was just to go shoot and kind of just do stuff on my own. But this year I’m getting in the with the coaches more and still getting in on my own, and hopefully, be able to make it in the lineup next year. ... I was a freshman, but I should have been taking it more seriously and I should have treated it more like a job and less like something I was doing for fun."

I am wondering if he is still struggling with cranking up the intensity needed to contribute at the B1G level. He seems like a great kid (I like the demeanor I see from him on the bench), but I don't have a lot of confidence that he will ever contribute. I hope he proves me wrong.

In a previous post, before PMac announced his leave of absence, mostly tongue in cheek, I suggested Fran talk to KF about letting Cooper DeJean and some other football/former basketball players join the roster. The way things are going, it looks like Fran needs to do that or dip into the intramural ranks and see if he can find a body or two or three, especially ones who might be able to score. 2023 isn't lookin' good, and desperate times call for . . . well, you know.

One can only infer that Josh and Mulvey are liabilities defensively as I don't think Fran would be concerned about them not contributing offensively. It's pretty telling that Fran would rather go ultra small than play either of these guys. Ultimately I think he is going to have to get comfortable with one of them getting some PT as Rebraca and Kris can't keep the heavy minute load up the entire season IMO.

Personally feel IF the coaching staff is sticking, an overhaul is needed with the Bball squad.
Fran 3.0ish 🥴
The BigO experiment needs to be BigOver after this season. It’s time to do a little house cleaning and go full on portal.
O, the Mulv and Ulis are not B10 caliber players and need to find new homes. CMC is done for sure, we’ll see if PMC sticks around and KM will obviously go pro.
That leaves plenty of spots to fill.
Bring in the HS recruits and go get 3-4 transfers.
Whether he likes it or not, Fran needs to get good at navigating the portal. This is the landscape now and it is time to put Gattens and Eldridge to work.

Ulis is fine. He may not be a star but a very useful part. Mulvey probably stays too. Josh, don't know how you got back to Iowa but it may be over now.

Previously he was fighting the portal battle unarmed. Now that Iowa's NIL efforts are actually up and going, he will have a shot to at least compete on somewhat equal footing for portal recruits.

Yes, Connor is gone this year and it's highly likely that Kris Murray is playing his last year in college, as is Rebraca. I have no inside information, but I would be very surprised if PMac isn't back on the team next year, and probably later this year. So yes, Iowa will have to bring in players via the portal as everyone does. Fran will be given plenty of leash, as he should. Many here seems to have given up on this season already. Iowa could end up an NIT team, but I'm not convinced of that yet. If they get into the NCAA tournament, it would mark 5 straight years Iowa has had an NCAA team (I count 2020 as Iowa was in the NCAA tournament guaranteed before COVID shut down the season). The last time that happened at Iowa was 1985-89 through the end of Raveling years and start of Dr. Tom Years. That was over 30 years ago, so no Fran is under zero pressure for his job or to make changes to his staff. And he shouldn't be.

Way too early in the season lots of hoops to be played. Its hard for Bigs to run at the pace that Iowa is playing at. There has not been a ton of minutes for Jelly or Mulvey. Mulvey came in and held serve vs. Dickinson. Rebraca is gone next year it is not going to be easy to replace his production.

Saw Josh at the women's game Saturday and he was limping around.
If Iowa had decent depth at the 5 spot you could keep him around and hope he developed more to give spot time. He is not going to help and we need a couple bigs. Mulvey has some potential. Time to cut bait.
