Obviously the Nebraska defense has been horrible this year and mediocre at best recently. D play has not been indicative of the blackshirts tradition. I propose that future coaches do not hand out ANY blackshirts until the team proves it on the field. I also think that fans should stop calling the defense "Blackshirts" until order has been restored and the entire d proves they are worthy of wearing them

My Blackshirt mug has been in my office drawer for many years now. I'll bring it out again when the Blackshirts return.

What happens if the defense never gets good enough again and we forget about the tradition?

Sad but true I guess. Nothing said they had to be good to get a black shirts, just a starter. Ours just happen to be not good

Except that cauldron of live practices and competition that was NU of old meant that to make it to the starting position actually meant something. Moreover, they actually played like it meant something. Coloring me stupid, but if I was ever good enough to play at that level and was part of this steaming pile of crap we are being subjected to week in and week out as a standard, I would be horrified and embarrassed to call myself a "black shirt". But then, I have a bit of pride rather than a lot of excuses.

The teams from back them had heart and passion and pride. I am guessing if players back then knew they weren't playing good enough they would turn their shirt in themselves....
What do we expect from the participation trophy generation. The black shirts have just become another participation trophy for them.

I get the sentiment, but I also remember people freaking out about BP ruining the blackshirt tradition by handling it that exact way. “It’s for the starting defense” or “The will he or won’t he give them out is turning this place into a circus” were the main rallying cries before.

I happen to agree with those reasons, but the existence of this discussion is just further proof that fans are never happy when we are losing about anything and that conversely winning cures everything.

Defense needs to play like the Blackshirts used to before they call themselves that.

Another tradition that's gone downhill is the "tunnel walk ". It looks more like a funeral march. Somebody get fired up, for God's sake.
