Scored two bottles tonight in Lexington. Just a heads up to fellow Lexingtonians that like it. It's available but scarce.

Crazy how it's changed with regards to availability. Buffalo Trace will just keep raising prices and limiting production until the whiskey market crashes again.

You can usually find Blantons, Weller SR, Weller antique and baby Sac on the 3rd Friday of the month or 4th Saturday at liquor barns. I pretty much rack up when I hit it right. Some people follow the damn Buffalo Trace truck.

The bourbon market is whack right now. I like bourbon but I’m not paying those crazy prices

It's ridiculous. It's pretty much pushed me to rye. Easier to get and really good quality at decent prices. Mainly because it all comes from pretty much the same distillate, or at least I'm told.

I always preferred a higher rye mashbill anyway. So it was probably a natural progression for me

A good deal of it comes from MGP in Indiana. And now people are copying their mash bill (95% rye, 5% malted barley) since it's become the "default" flavor profile.

Most of the Kentucky stuff is very different, with a high percentage of corn (usually right at 51% rye). the heritage produced Kentucky ryes - Rittenhouse/Pikesville from heaven hill, WIldTurkey, Jim Beam/Knob Creek, Woodford, etc- Those are all "Kentucky ryes" with a lot of corn. Indiana ryes like Bulleit, KY Owl, Old Carter, Angel's Envy, Rossville Union, Ezra Brooks, etc are MGP's distillate with 95% rye. Newer Kentucky distilleries (willett, rabbit hole, etc) are copying the mash bill from MGP as well.

Raising prices: Almost certainly.

Limiting production: Quite the opposite. They're expanding production pretty much non-stop, and are in the midst of their biggest expansion since the 50s.

Who is buying the bourbon on the secondary market? More speculators? Gift-givers?

With so many options, who are the people actually paying 500X the cost?

If anyone lives in Louisville, 3rd Turn Brewery in JTown is getting ready to open a high end bourbon and rare beer bar right next to the original. I'm not sure when it is opening but I'm pretty sure it will be before the end of the year.

3 or 4 years ago, Costco always had a pallet of Blanton's, 10 years ago Weller was the bourbon we bought handles of for our golf trip. The bourbon craze has gone beyond out of control.
