Chris Mullin is stepping down. And with Mike Cragg as the AD at St. John’s, it would seem Bobby makes a lot of sense....not just the Duke angle, but the east coast/New York/Jersey angle, as well.

What a perfect fit. Almost as perfect as Mullin was.

Bobby is my favorite all-time college player (I started getting into the sport around 91) and as a New Yorker, I'd love to see him running the show at St. John's.

My only concern would be that another move might paint him in a negative light as a job jobber.

It is hard to recruit if student-athletes think you have a foot out the door before you even unpack your luggage.

I am not saying he is a job hopper; just that a third job in seven seasons may create a false image of him.

Why is Mullins leaving?? And way better than AZ St

Not sure Mullins was ever going to be a good enough coach to make it work. Why continue down a path that was going to make it very awkward for both sides and the fanbase when a split now could salvage a decent relationship going forward? It seemed destined for an ugly divorce.

I cannot stand SJU fans as they think program is elite so do not want my #2 favorite Duke player coaching there. NYC does not produce any talent so recruiting is very tough.

I wouldn’t say no talent. St John’s is still capable of landing elite talent. They have had issues qualifying kids academically once committed but they still have the ability to land talent. Lavin did, so did Mullins.

I think Bobby would do well there.

It would be a mistake. Stay in the desert and enjoy the weather (ASU alum here)

What do you bet UCLA ends up getting Luke Walton as their coach. I had not heard it anywhere but I did hear he may be on the outs with the lakers. His dad played at UCLA, could be a good fit.

While I think it would be a pretty cool story if Hurley went to St. Johns, I don't see it as anything more than a lateral move at best. I would think that if he is going to move on from ASU it would have to be for more of a player in a power conference, meaning a team that is expected to finish in the top 5 of a power conference every year.

Either way, I think he'd be great wherever he is, but I feel like this would not really be a "step up" for him.

Plus SJU campus is a dump, not getting big time players there. Let SJU fans keep talking about lone Final Four berth in 1985.....lol

I don’t agree. I think St Johns could easily be sold to recruits, especially NYC kids. Stay home, play at the garden in front of family and friends. A lot of inner city kids are not well off, playing in front of their family would be a rather big deal IMO. The St Johns brand may have rusted over the years but NY is still NY.

They should be able to put quality teams on the court every year and definitely be one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the Big East each season.

Luke is probably monitoring the Arizona situation

I agree with most of this. The MSG lure is still huge for people from NYC. I think this would have been different if the Big East was really still a thing. I just don't see a head coach moving from a program he's had success at in a power conference to a non-power conference like this. I think it would have made more sense if Hurley were moving there straight from Buffalo.

As a SJU grad I'm surprised at Mullin's departure. The made the tournament and seemed headed in the right direction. Oh well.

Commuter school, lack of a true campus hurts SJU. Additionally, most of the best talent leaves to avoid the distractions of home/NYC. Ironically, Mullins shouldn't have stayed and played there. If he got away from home/NYC, chances are he doesn't develop some of the bad lifestyle habits that took a big toll on him

SJU has ONE Final Four appearance, the only reason anyone talks about SJU is due to being in NY. There is no history nor allure to taking that job. Unless someone cares about the 1957 Lapchick Tourney.

Scheyer name keeps coming up for SJU and media/city coaches are complaining about Duke connection with Cragg. Hope Scheyer doesn't take job b/c everyone in NYC will be out to get him. Bet Amaker gets mentioned as well.

Ah man, I knew it would start happening, but we need Scheyer to stay and continue to learn under the GOAT. Depending on the GOAT's opinion obviously and how much longer he coaches, I was getting the feeling Scheyer may be the guy eventually to take the job.

Interesting I mean I guess K isn’t going to be around forever. We might should have a thread on who the next coach will be

With the right coach St. Johns could be a player again. UConn started grabbing a lot of the NYC kids in the 90's and 2000's, as a lot of them went to prep schools in Conn. and surrounding areas. St. John's is still a brand name in the NYC area. Mullin seemed to be doing good, but I've heard him and the AD didn't see eye to eye. None of my SJU friends wanted Hurley lol. The Duke hate runs deep.

Well the SJU coaching search has gone well(extreme sarcam)! Top SJU booster ripped school heirachy yesterday on WFAN, quite entertaining. Forwarding my middle school basketball/AAU coaching resume to SJU athletic office later today. Poser, Cluess and UMBC coach all turned down offers....LOL

SJU offered Hurley less than his current salary at ASU. Move to NY, make less money and pay double taxes. Solid strategy! But it's New Yaaaawwwk!

No way Scheyer even attends an interview, program is toxic.

The game of basketball has exploded over past 10-15 years with SJU & Knicks being putrid. The whole NY aura is so overblown. With the internet and tv packages big market teams don't have to be successful for leagues to grow.

Yeah, I read a piece on ESPN.com just this morning and saw Cluess turned them down to stay at Iona. And he's a St. John's guy, too. Double ouch.

On top of that, it sounds as though their roster is having a big overhaul. Good thing they have three transfers becoming eligible immediately or they'd have a tough time throwing together a team with everyone that's leaving.

The fan base is VERY disappointed that Mullin left. Seemed like a perfect fit. I say get Lavin.

Leah D was once "downsized", fired. canned, relieved of her duties, whatever. And she felt relieved until the managing partner said it wasn't "the right fit". Stupid mumbo jumbo. I like Mike Anderson. I think he can coach. I think St.John's is a good job. I hate the saying, but this is a bad fit
