Never felt he was nothing but a decent mid major coach. Had good success at Southern Illinois, but flamed out at Illinois and kstank.

But he made a fair amount of money in the mean time. His problem is that his style of "physical" defense that made his SIU teams successful without actually having skilled basketball players wasn't allowed after about 2005 (until its apparent resurgence to an extent this year)

Hard pass. This program needs a grumpy ******* with a staff that can coach a physical brand of basketball. Recruit some MEN who want to be coached and won't panic and flee the battle field at the first sign of trouble.

He went scorched earth on his place in KSU history compared to many recent coaches there and with his frustrations with social media comments.

Not leaving on the best of terms with Wildcat fans.

Is available now. 😁
I suspect he’s done. His brother of a similar age was a high school coach in chicago suburbs forever but he has already retired from coach. (2 yrs ago maybe). Btw His brother coached Jon scheyer in hs in some awesome games (incl vs derick rose)

Sort of a tough call on BW...500 career wins, conference championships in 3 leagues and I think 5-6 Sweet 16's.

Weber was a solid coach who got a decent number of wins with average rosters in places that were not the easiest places to recruit. I think he still enjoys coaching, but is done with the 'business' of college basketball.

Dude HATES the cheating aspect of CBB.

I think had he stayed at SIU he could have turned them into a mid-major power. Making the dance 3/4 years and getting to the sweet 16 every now and then.

Bruce is a good dude. Clean. Humble. Generous. Quirky. And he's been an excellent coach with talent. Won two championships at K-State plus an Elite 8 run. Not bad for a coach who didn't cheat.

I would not be surprised to see him take the Milwaukee job, his home area. Nor would I if he became the next Doc Sadler somewhere.

He's deeply religious. A family man who may just hang it up at age 65. I would.

He had a better winning percentage at Illinois than he did at Southern Ill. It just goes to show you that winning 65% of your games at Southern Illinois can get you a great gig, but winning 67% of your games at the "great gig" isn't good enough to keep that gig.

Two 20 loss seasons in 10 years at Kansas St and they part ways with you, at Nebraska, three consecutive 20 loss seasons and you get to keep your job.

I think Bruce’s problem at Illinois was the trajectory of the program. His win % dropped off after Bill Self’s players left the program and people weren’t satisfied with his recruiting there either. Not to mention his Bill Self funeral thing was just weird. But no coach can be an extra defender on the court like he can.🤣

of course, none of that excuses anything about the Hoiberg disaster. That contract is just too big to be bought out this year seems to be the real problem.

Btw, Kansas State is looking to steal Underwood from Illinois. At first glance, I’d laugh at the thought, but he is a K State alum after all so maybe there’s a chance?

Underwood being a K-State alum will be helpful in that he'll take their phone call. Then the conversation will quickly get to the part where Underwood says, "Here are some up-and-coming coaches you should take a look at."

Ironically, Weber’s predecessor at KSU - Frank Martin - was fired yesterday from South Carolina.

KSU is a good case study. They have certain “delusions” of grandeur with their hoops program, but they have 2 elite 8 appearances since 2010 and have won 9 NCAA Tournament games in that time.

If KSU can manage that, well - you know where this is going.

I chuckle at a Husker talking delusion-smack. But let me not digress.

My hope is that K-State hires Jerome Tang, Baylor's long-time assistant. I believe Underwood is a candidate, but he's also at a great basketball school, making tons of money, and winning championships. Plus, he's not lily-white, so to speak, having been involved in the FBI sting at both USC,e and oSu.

Tang is ready for his own gig. I've always thought of him as the basketball equivalent of Chris Peterson at Boise under Dan Hawkins.

He would add to your vulgarity dictionary while winning at a .500 clip and making the dance party every five years or so.

“You mother f***ing c**k sucker, what the f*** are you f***ing thinking out there?!? You’re a f***ing embarrassment…” and on it went, sucking the life of the huddle. Brad Underwood (Martin’s top assistant, and loyal K-State man) tried to soothe things over with Spradling afterward, but it was clear a threshold had been crossed. It was then that Spradling decided to join the exodus that several of his teammates were planning for the end of the season.

Hiring Tang seems like a slap in the face of ‘do it the right way’ Weber.
Quite the opposite. Tang is known as deeply religious and a high character dude. $2.1 million, 6-year contract. I favored Tang from the get-go. This is an outstanding hirer. Maybe better than Chris Klieman.

Weren't Art Briles and Hugh Freeze once known as deeply religious, too?

I'm not aware of any dirt at Baylor under coach Drew's basketball program. And I don't remember Art Briles ever being thought of as particularly religious, or not. That said, I'm not here to defend Baylor, only to continue this thread about Bruce Weber's retirement.

Fred Hoiberg was once considered an A+ hire. Groce at Illinois another. Shaka Smart at Texas yet another.

I didn't start this thread. I added some texture to it from a K-State perspective. A good man and solid coach couldn't finish the deal to K-State's expectations. He's replaced by another high-character guy who seems to fit the slot. We'll see how it goes. Hiring coaches is generally a crap-shoot. #emaw

Art Briles literally wrote a book about "Faith and Football".

It's pathetic how we celebrate these cheaters in real-time. Bill Self has 5 level one violations pending, yet Ku gets all the sweet ink for their B12 championships and tournament runs. Bruce Pearl has a show cause on his resume'. Frank Martin bloviates in the booth after skirting the FBI/NCAA investigations. Petino and Miller both get jobs at Catholic schools: Father, I have sinned. You're forgiven, my son. It's insane.

Nothing new about this. Eddie Sutton got caught FedExing an envelope full of cash to one Kentucky recruit's home and arranging for someone to take the SAT test for another. So he took a year off, landed at Oklahoma State, and was celebrated as a grand gentleman of the game until one of his falling-down-drunk driving episodes ended in a bad accident. So to show Eddie that this behavior was absolutely unacceptable, OSU handed the program over to his kid.

These guys will always resurface, as long as someone thinks they can deliver Ws and dollars.

KU beating KSU by a trillion in the Phogg once per year is the easiest money offered by Vegas.

a midwest college hoops tradition unlike any other
