Is Minnesota really that good? Before the season, I'd kind of relegated them to the bottom 3-4 teams in the Big Ten. To this point, though, they haven't really looked the part. Guess my question is, is their record more a product of smoke and mirrors (and a bit of a soft schedule), or does Little Ricky actually have a decent thing going?
So far, it seems like the Gophers are legitimately really good. They have some new pieces--a transfer Reggie Lynch from Illinois State at center, who has been nice for them. More noteable is 6'8" freshman Amir Coffey (brother of NU Women's Nia Coffey) who is kicking *** with 30+ minutes and 12 ppg. And Nate Mason is one of the best PGs in the league (15 ppg, 6 apg). The Gophers have 4 players averaging double-figures scoring and they are kenpom's 17th ranked defense in the country!
Minnesota has beaten 6 top 100 kenpom teams, including Purdue at Purdue. Their only losses were to AP #12 (Coaches #13) Florida State and to Michigan State in OT--in a game that Minnesota should have won after leading by double digits most of the game.
I, too, have been waiting for the bottom to drop out on this Gophers squad... But, it might not happen. On paper, they are up there with Purdue and Wisconsin in the top tier of the B1G right now.
