He's never been a good coach. He has done less with more .. more than anyone I seen. Look how many players are in the nba. Imagine giving a coach like pope those players he would have had 3 4 titles. He literally thinks just throw the talent out there and we will win. He did it one year with a.d. it's unreal

I am over it. Been. But it's true. I'm putting a fan duel team in and like 20 former kentucky players are going for big bucks to pick and its unreal he had all thes3 players with only 1 title.
Cal did great. Taking a bunch of 17-18 future nba stars doesn’t mean automatic college wins.
If recruiting was that important wouldn’t Duke and UK have titles every year?
Cal was great. One bounce of the ball and he could easily have 3 titles at UK.

Let’s be honest, cal was amazing at Kentucky…..until he wasn’t. I’m ready to see this fanbase tip the hat and exercise that demon. Let it go.
I'm not a total anti cal guy. But facts are facts. He's had more nba players by far than any other team yet needed a.d. to carry him to a title. He's not a good basketball coach. He's a good recruiter. Plain n simple

He was a great coach for a long time. But the game changed and adapts and he just hasn’t. He’s still trying to grind out every game and pound the ball inside like it’s 10-15 years ago. He just wants to keep every game close and hope his talent can make plays at the end.
Lets be honest tho. College basketball coaches need to do two things...........1) Recruit enough talent and 2) coach that talent.
You need BOTH.
Regardless of how his era ended here at UK, Cal did that for a large majority of his coaching career. He was always an excellent recruiter and a so so coach. But it did work for the most part.

Cal should have won 3 titles here. Massive failure at UK, IMO.
Exactly. With all that talent that came thru it's actually embarssing he only won 1.
I just can’t look at what he did at Umass and say he was never a great coach. He had two guys there and a bunch of nobodies. He got Camby and I think maybe Donta Bright was the other highly rated guy. He took arguably the greatest team in the modern era to the wire with a starting backcourt of Carmelo Traviosa and Edgar Padilla.

Maybe you’re right. A lot of people have said that for years now and I didn’t buy it because I couldn’t believe a single assistant could have that big of an impact on the in game coaching. But now i’m starting to wonder. Because he really hasn’t been the same since he lost Robic.
If he would won just another title , he would have still been our coach,
Like others said, he refused to adapt to the new era. I will never turn my nose at what he did for those first 7-9 years at UK, but that guy is gone. He would rather go down on his sinking ship than admit he was wrong.

I will always be grateful to Cal for the championship and for the many great memories of some of my all-time favorite players. But if he can’t find some way to overhaul his offensive and defensive systems, it’s hard to imagine his career will last much longer. Arkansas fans certainly won’t put up with losing for long.

Never really got the "he should win X number of titles"
1) This is a one and done tournament. The best team is typically given odds in the 30%.
2) What years were we even considered the best team? 2012 when we won and 2015. That's it.
I always thought 1 was the likely outcome in that era.

Just glad he is gone, was so tired of watching the guards dribble the leather off the ball, tired of watching other teams score 3 or 4 times a game on their out of bounds play while his team struggles to get the ball in bound. Cal is a lazy coach who relies on the players to make plays.
Us basketball bennies clearly identified a dozen problems with Cal's system. He was stubborn and acted like we were idiots. That's why everyone gets joy watching him do the same stupid things with the same bad results.
I’d say we were only the best team those 2 seasons. But I think we were the best team left standing at some point late in the tourney a few other times. I think we were the best left in 2010 by the E8 and immediately choked. 2014 and lost to Uconn in the finals. 2017 and lost to UNC but that’s not on Cal.
Man…if we just get by west virginia in 2010 I think we cruise to that title. It’s not that Duke was bad but we were the worst possible matchup for them.

Robic was the man behind the curtains that made Cal look good for so many years, Cal with all the talent is just below average coach.
His coaching sux bout as much as the checkered jacked looks.
I do not agree that he was never a good coach. That is silly talk.
1. Part of coaching is recruiting. He is probably the 1/2 best recruiter of all time.
2. He used to be a really good coach. He went toe to toe with several of Pitinos teams in the '90's and beat them....he didn't have ridiculous talent then.
3. He's taken 3 different schools to a FF
4. Just because you can recruit great players, it doesn't mean it is easy to make them play as a team.
Cal was never great at the end of the game; I'll agree there. He also became far too stubborn and showed no willingness to change. He lost the fast ball he had.
