Box and 1 is efficient when the opposing team has one guy that is extremely good scorer and you want to face guard him and deny him the ball and the opportunity to score, and you think the other 4 players are capable to guard the remaining opponents.
When the opposing team has two good scorer you can try triangle and two , where you have the same concept but now you face guarding two players.
If you have 3 good scorer and penetration you can try an aggressive or less aggressive 1-3-1.
Calipari team typically had one maximum two really good 3 points shooters so he saw some boxes and one and triangle and two especially from guys like Self or Barnes. He would try to counter balance that by running those double screens and having the shooter run a lot to get open. Eventually the guys legs will get tired and his shot would get effected.
Last year was an anomaly when we had 3 pure shooters but obviously he didn’t know how to use them.
Against the current roaster of Kentucky, counting out Butler, Kriisa and Carr , you are left with pure shooters: Brea, JR, Almanor and reduced role Noah, Perry and Garrison.
If don’t play Brea , Jr and Almanor all together, in theory you could try box and one or triangle and two , pending how many of them are on the floor on the same time.
Neither Brea or Jr or Almanor can create of the dribble like Dilly last year or Monk and Murray in the past, so it might work. Kentucky tough is not a team that relies on players creating their own shot, we play more schematic , which can be good for this current roaster but bad if the opposing coach makes the right adjustments.
Let’s hope that Pope makes the correct tactical choices and our players will execute at high level..
