Can Justin Robinson contribute next season?

Forget the kid being Dave Robinson son, he's 6'8, growing and 200 plus lbs. Will he be able to play a little wf/sf/pf?

To the coaching staff, you wonder if he may be that little secret. Izzo and a few others are known for redshirting a 'so called' walk-on and using them in there 4th and 5th year.

I would hate for this kid to transfer, I know it happens, and be successful in someone else program.

I can't even remember seeing him play, so I doubt he's going to start playing much very soon. But things can change, and quickly, so who really knows...other than K.

The assumption that a player can not contribute is not always fair. I'm talking about down the road in the 4th or 5th year, he's in year 3.

Never going to contribute in games, practice yes. If Javin couldn't contribute much this year, Robinson won't be able if he stays 8 years.

In no way am I trying to fan flames on this thread, but what do you think the mindset is of a kid who could play somewhere likely in D1 yet chooses to come to Duke with the very good chance he might never see meaning minutes?

Is it the Duke education that attracts that player? Or is it being a team role player like Chov says?

Robinson didn't come to Duke for Basketball. He came for his education and decided to try out to be a walk on. He even earned a scholarship for his first or second year.

If I'm not mistaken he didn't come with the intent to play it was for the school it's self. It should be noted he tried out as a walk on.

He didn't have to try out, he's what you call a preferred walk on. He always had a spot just not guaranteed a scholarship unless one became available.

But you're correct- he chose Duke bc he wanted to be at Duke and be a part of this, knowing full well that he was never likely to get playing time. And that is just fine, a lot of guys would trade spots with him.

A great all-around young man proud to be a Blue Devil basketball member. Remember the way he consoled and helped Marshall Plumlee get over the elimination loss to Oregon in '16.Some of these OAD's now could stand a lesson in humility from Robinson....

Get an education from Duke while learning the game of basketball from the goat and having a chance to win a title while trying to get better then going to play..if I wasn't good enough I'd defiantly rather sit on dukes bench then someone else's and learn and transfer

Yeah I couldn't remember exactly all about the walk on part. I just remembered he was already coming to Duke for academics.

Well, I do not want the Navy Man mad a year from now saying his kid had the talent to play. As if he is a rotational player. It happens.

You are really taking the high road. Sorry, I just watched 30 for 30 on Cal. He made some sense, but threw D. Rose under the bus!

He came to Duke fully understanding what his role would be. If I remember correctly his dad was well aware of this and was supportive. I think he is a prime example of a kid who came to Duke mainly because of academics and was given the opportunity of playing basketball for Coach K. There is no doubt the kid could play somewhere and contribute but once again he came to Duke for the academics and playing basketball and practicing with some of the best players in the country. Now of course there is a chance of him contributing at Duke at some point in his career. If that doesn't happen that's fine I really don't care to hear anyone talking crap about his play at all at Duke. David Robinson knows what he's doing and so does his son. Happy to have Justin as a Dukie no matter how much he plays or contributes. OFC

I believe given the chance Justin could contribute. But as u said Sky he came to Duke knowing what his role was and accepted it without making a big deal about it.

Totally agree with Sky on this. Additionally, if Big Luke could help UNC to a sbip, who knows what Justin could contribute on the court. Besides, as someone already mentioned, Justin has already contributed and surely continues to contribute as a phenomenal teammate as illustrated by the Marhal Plumlee story.

I think Justin could contribute in the right scenario....it might behoove him to redshirt, though. That said, he maybe doesn't want to. I could also see him doing what Obi did and using the grad transfer route. We'll see.

Lastly, the comparisons to Maye don't totally apply. People forget that Maye was a pretty highly regarded recruit in the top 100 by most services. UVA was after him HARD. In the end, lineage won out and Maye paid his own way for one season. He wasn't a traditional walk-on.
