Why was Beran on the court for the last 8 minutes of the game and what made him a sacred cow?

Don’t want to play Young with Nance, fine. But what justifies Beran over Williams at this point?

Additionally how many losses does it take before trying something different?

Thanks in advance for the help. I am struggling

Not sure I can help but I do know that it’s really hard to win when you give up 29 points and go down 15 in the first 8 minutes of the game. Credit to the Cats making it a game but can’t come out of the gates playing like that and expect to win on the road.

There are hundreds of reasons why this program keeps losing. Want another? Buie hits a driving scoop shot to cut the lead to 6 with three minutes left. Cats have some momentum. Then, next Ohio State possession, Berry fouls his man 35 feet from the basket sending him to the line. That is just losing basketball. The Cats find all sorts of ways to play losing basketball.

Every loss is within 6 points except this one at 8, and they showed a ton of grit here. Why they could not guard Liddell’s 3 early on is beyond comprehension. But, in the end, we have no one who can guard Liddell one on one, and Beran didn’t do it poorly in the second half. Our coach gets a lot out of these players, who are not as talented as the opponent. That being said, I agree making a change could be refreshing at a minimum.

And with 1:22 left and 6 seconds left on the shot clock OSU inbounds and Audige tries to take a charge at the 3 point line with about 3 seconds left on the shot clock while the OSU guy would’ve had to take a difficult 3 on the run had Audige just stayed with him instead of taking a dive trying to draw a charge which was easily a block. Again, losing basketball.

At some point in the 2nd half, we are closing in, we show a zone on an baseline inbound play. OSU is not even understanding it’s a zone and is trying to set screens. Somehow we lose Liddell (I think) and allow an inbound pass under the basket. I think it was Audige who let him go in front of him. More losing basketball.

You are pointing out two different things...

questionable lineup decisions - I too was disappointed that Berry was pulled - that triggered an immediate surge by OSU.
mental mistakes on the court by our players - these vary every game, but seem to increase at the end of close games.

It took BTN commentator Jess Settles all of 4 minutes to say "I really like when Northwestern has Young and Nance on the floor together. Nance is a natural forward and Young is a natural center."

He said it when Young entered the game for the first time and Nance stayed on the floor, so it was based on previous games.

Collins tried them together several times tonight, but the rest of the team looked befuddled.

I asked this on the other board but can anyone explain what we were in defensively? If we were in man, why didn’t Young recover to Liddell when the ball went to the corner? If they were in zone why didn’t Greer try to get over to Liddell instead of just pointing at him? I don’t get how we let Liddell be that open after hitting 4 straight 3s. Our rotations defensively were just bad.
I guess teams will get out of slumps vs us though. 257th out 350 teams in defensive 3Pt% coming into tonight.
