That article is pretty messed up in my opinion. The big failure is not defining an X's and O's coach. In my mind, the criteria for those are tactical preparation of a specific game plan, play selection, player management on the court, half time adjustments, etc. In other words, what goes into coaching a team in a given game. The article talks about recruiting, player development and other topics of strategic importance rarely does it focus on a specific X and O type discussion. I think the goal of the article is specifically to attract attention as it does little to objectively address the topic of X's and O's. Typical talking head stuff.

He already has won in just his first year. He beat more ranked teams than anyone and did it with less athleticism than almost every team he faced.

Need rings...so SEC title, no NCAA title. It's early, so he has time, but we only care about banners here.

This. If you win the SEC, SEC tourney, make a final four and win a title then the accolades really flow in. I think he will do at least one of those and hopefully more this coming season.

Can't wait to see how our unranked coach does against their "number one X&O's coach" in 22 days.

Three HOF coaches on that list and none got above 4% of the vote. Hmmm...That's some perspective on their list.
In the comments after that poll, several reasons for Painter being at the top were quoted. I think we saw what Pope did last year and most of us will agree that he checked those boxes nicely, too.

apparently theses coaches didn't watch last year's Duke game or Gonzaga
But did they watch the three Bama games, the Ohio St game, or the loss to the Vols in the tourney? I get it, there's a section of the fanbase that's seriously got Pope love goggles on. I'd like to see him win something that matters before I anoint him among the best. Btw, before you guys sharpen your pitchforks, I thought he did a really good job last season.

Lol! Tough crowd, I guess. We layed an egg with Oh. St and they probably played their best game all year. Nonetheless, given all of the challenges we faced last season, starting on Pope's first day...I really can't say a bad word about last season at all. FWIW, we are a .500 team in the game preceding Christmas break over a 10 year span, many against even lesser competition than Oh. St. That stat should speak volumes to whoever our coach is.
We won a lot of games that we were not supposed to win. We lost a couple were shouldn't have and we lost a few to teams that were just better than we were.
We saw coaching literally win games we were not supposed to win and overall, I give Pope a solid A for last season. We have better talent, more depth and the SEC is tough but not like last season. The real test of coaching this year's team is gonna be getting everyone to play together and that seems to be another strength of Pope. Time will tell. From what I've seen so far, I'm not worried at all about his x's and o's. Remember the Laettner shot? That was a coaching mistake by one of the best to ever coach the game, so I expect any human to make mistakes, on occasion. To my eyes, we're in good hands...regardless of that silly poll. I will agree that it's too early to call him one of the best in an overall scenario but when you look at what he did with what he had to work/deal with last season...it was IMPRESSIVE, to me.

Football is a different game, but the great Vince Lombardi said guys who can draw up plays are a dime a dozen. His meaning was you can hire guys for that part of coaching. He felt other aspects of coaching were more important.
